Quite an uproar developed last week after stories about the Jan. 6 events in Washington D.C. at the Capitol were published in the Journal-Tribune.
We reached out to Marysville City Councilman Aaron Carpenter, who had traveled to the nation’s capital that day. An eruption came from those not in agreement with Carpenter. They were even calling for him to be removed as a council member. They didn’t like what he had to say and also felt that the article in the Journal-Tribune gave him a platform that he should not have had.
On the other side, there were plenty of Carpenter supporters who came to his defense and felt like his first amendment rights were being trampled on. Carpenter said he was in Washington D.C. in support of free speech and to support President Donald Trump.
Our role as the local newspaper is to make sure both sides of the story are presented. We take pride in letting those with something to say have time to voice their opinions, including letters to the editor.
Again, our intention was to present the local angle to the story and document what transpired. Now that City Council has tabled a motion to censure Carpenter, we hope that cooler heads will prevail and that everyone can move forward with council getting back to the business of running the city.
