With the Super Bowl this weekend, football will be on the minds of many around the country. Some will be watching the big game even though their team isn’t on the field.
The National Football League is made up of 31 teams with only two reaching the Super Bowl. That leaves the other 29 searching for the road map to reset their programs in search of a trip to next year’s championship. That search actually starts on what is known as “black Monday,” which occurs after the last regular season game when some coaches who didn’t make the playoffs are fired.
Of note, the Dallas Cowboys moved on from coach Jason Garrett after 10 seasons, the New York Giants fired Pat Shurmur after two years, and it took the Cleveland Browns just one year before Freddie Kitchens was fired.
It’s not just NFL teams, however, that are looking to the future. With primaries throughout the country set to begin in the near future, voters will be asked to select the next group of leaders as the nation starts a new decade.
Marysville and Union County have several interesting elections in the March 17 Primary. Although local voters will be casting their ballots in six different races where there is no opposition, those that are contested have a good number of candidates. We we think this is positive because it gives the voters a choice for new leadership.
With so many seats up for grabs, the Journal-Tribune is publishing a countywide voters guide on Thursday, Feb. 13, ahead of the start of early voting on Feb. 19. We are doing this so all residents in Union County can be informed about the election.
As we start a new decade, there is always a point in time when some of those in charge must take on a new challenge. With that said, we are excited about the upcoming Primary Election to see who wins and moves on to the November ballot. The winners there will take on the task of continuing to shape the future of Marysville and Union County.
