The value of a local newspaper can mean many things to local residents.
Some see our role as the watch dog of the local tax dollars. Others liken us to being a nosy neighbor, but most don’t think of us as vehicle to help keep the community safe.
Recently a Logan County man was charged with impersonating a fireman several times in recent weeks. One such time was at the scene of a traffic crash covered by the Journal-Tribune.
Many of our photos show evidence that he was at the scene in a uniform, which turned out to be stolen. We didn’t know that the photos would have any value beyond documenting the crash.
After our coverage of the accident, charges were filed against the Logan County man. The next day we were contacted by the Union County Prosecutors office asking if we could help them by sending our photos of the accident scene to them.
We gladly obliged because we have always tried to work with local law enforcement officials to keep residents aware of the goings on locally, especially when it pertains to their safety.
As part of the fabric of the community for the past 169 years, we are trying to do our part to help preserve it for the next generation.
