Saturday matinees
Saturdays have always been a special time for kids. There’s no school, and they can pretty much spend the day having a good time. When I was six years old, in 1938, Saturdays took on a new importance. You see, that was when my parents first allowed me to go to the Avalon Theater all by myself to see the Saturday matinee. It was always a double feature, and both films were usually westerns. Can you imagine that – two cowboy movies, one after the other. Life just didn’t get any better than that.
