National Art Honor Society opens acceptance to high school students
By Isabelle Shroyer
Marysville High School’s National Art Honor Society (NAHS) makes visual arts more visible.
A goal of NAHS is to recognize students who have shown an outstanding ability in art. This organization also works to help students achieve the highest standards in art areas and bring art education to the eyes of the school and community.
The NAHS, sponsored by the National Art Education Association, is a professional organization for art teachers, college and university art personnel, art supervisors, museum art educators and others involved with the quality of education in the visual arts.
If someone wishes to participate, then they will be accepted on probation into the Marysville High School chapter. The requirements for eligibility include attending monthly meetings, participating in one NAHS art activity per semester and completing at least one semester of art during their high school years.
Students are also responsible in maintaining a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in all art classes, recommended by former teachers, pay a $15 yearly fee, maintain a 2.0 minimum overall grade point average and complete a minimum of 15 volunteer hours related to visual arts.
If students meet and uphold those requirements, they will be recognized and inducted in the spring as active members.
Honor cords are available to distinguish the NAHS seniors at graduation. Members are also eligible for scholarships, special recognition and awards.

For Wednesday, students donned spooky ensembles and vied for the title of best costume. Thursday’s theme was orange and black, followed by flannel on Friday and a pie-eating contest.
Nine-day field trip to Greece planned for spring break
During every Marysville school spring break, there is a group of high school and STEM school students who go on an EF Educational Tour to Europe.
This school year is no different because in March, there will be a group going to Greece for nine days.
The ancient city of Athens will be the first stop. This city has the Temple of the Olympian Zeus, and the students will also take a tour of the Olympic stadium.
The Acropolis includes the Temple of Athena Nike, which once housed a gold statue of the goddess. One of the world’s greatest architectural feats is the Parthenon and will be a highlight of the day.
Poseidon’s Temple, Cape Sounion, and Epidaurus are included. The Marysville group will participate in a pottery workshop before going to Olympia and Delphi. There are a variety of artifacts dating back to 550 B.C. that will help the students learn more about Greece’s mythical past.
A student may earn either high school credit for no charge or may earn accredited college credit with designated payment per EF tours.
The next scheduled tour is likely to be Italy in 2020, and all high school students are invited to these tours. The students may fund raise if they choose.

Mock trial gets ready for contest
By Megan Melish
Mock trial has been preparing for its January competition.
Mock trial replicates a real courtroom and challenges students to either be attorneys or witnesses, take on that role as best they can and lead their team to victory.
Last year, Marysville High School’s team advanced to state competitions, and the current team hope this year’s team follows in their footsteps.
