A Union County Flag Day story


The flag at the Union County Courthouse is shown on Tuesday at half staff in honor of those lost in the Orlando nightclub shooting. Tuesday was Flag Day across the nation, an  annual event that marks the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.

For many years somewhere in southwestern Ohio, a large, old, 48-star American Flag lay tucked away in someone’s closet, a drawer or maybe a trunk. Years earlier, the flag might  have hung in a school auditorium, church or fraternal lodge. It may even have been draped over the coffin of a brave veteran who came home for eternal rest in Ohio. The flag carried no mark of origin or ownership.
