Candidates and issues set for Nov. 5 ballot

Local election officials say they are already preparing for November’s election.

“We are working hard, we have a lot of stuff to do,” said Brandon Clay, director of the Union County Board of Elections. “We are working to verify petitions and signatures, getting the new equipment ready, getting ballots ready. There is a lot of work to be done, but we are really excited for the upcoming election.”

Clay said that while this year’s election will not get the same national coverage as next year’s presidential contest, this one is, “just as important if not more important.”

“This is the level of government that is closest to the actual voters,” Clay said. “These are the people that will make decisions about zoning, about your tax dollars, about your neighborhoods, about your children’s education. They are your neighbors and people in your community who are making local decisions. These elections really do matter.”

While dozens of residents have filed for positions around the county, their petitions and candidacy will not be official until the next board of elections meeting, Tuesday.

“That’s when the board will certify petitions and would hear any protests,” Clay said.

He said the other important date is Oct. 7. That’s the last day to register for those wanting to vote. Hopeful voters are invited to download and complete a voter registration form from the county board of elections website and return to the Board of Elections office, 835 East 5th St.; Suite A; Marysville, OH 43040, in person or by mail.

Early voting begins Oct. 8, at the board office. Election Day is Nov. 5.
