A software company utilized by Memorial Health for its fundraising efforts has suffered a data breach.
Blackbaud, a cloud software company, recently disclosed it has been the victim of a ransomware attack that may have involved thousands of client organizations around the world. Affected entities range from non-profits and hospital systems to educational institutions and fundraising-focused companies.
Blackbaud officials said cybercriminals attacked their systems and copied a subset of data from their databases. The individuals demanded a ransom, which Blackbaud paid, in ex-change for assurances that the copy of the stolen information would be destroyed.
Memorial Health Foundation recently informed its current donors about this data security issue involving the organization’s third-party vendor. Blackbaud software is utilized for the Foundation’s platform for fundraising, donor communications and associated information management.
According to information provided by Memorial, the potential donor information that may have been involved includes name, address, telephone number, email address, donation history, limited notes and publicly available information.
Blackbaud maintains the attackers could not access credit card or bank information because of additional security controls used on this data.
Officials add that the breach did not involve Memorial Health computer systems or networks and did not involve patient information in any way. The Blackbaud platform is only utilized for fundraising efforts on behalf of the Foundation, Memorial said in a release.
The health system recommends donors remain vigilant toward any solicitations for charitable contributions and report any suspicious activity or suspected identity theft to law enforcement.
