This weekend will be one of the hottest yet this summer.
With temperatures nearing the triple-digits, the National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning. The warning will be in effect from 2 p.m. today until 8 p.m. Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service, the heat index, a measure of how hot it feels, will near 100 degrees today and reach 105 or above on Saturday and Sunday.
Actual temperatures will be in the mid- to low-90s during the day.
In a statement this morning, the Union County Sheriff’s office said, “very little relief is expected during the night,” as temperatures will only drop into the 70s.
The sheriff’s office has advised residents to limit their time outdoors and spend the day indoors if possible. Those who have activities planned outdoors should reschedule them to early morning or evening.
While outside, individuals should wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing. The statement encouraged residents to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
The statement also warned of a high risk of heat stroke, heat exhaustion and other illnesses. Individuals are encouraged to check in on their elderly relatives, who may be more prone to developing a heat-related illness.
If overcome by heat, one should move to a cool, shaded location immediately.
The sheriff’s office encourages heat stroke to be treated as an emergency. According to the Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness, signs of heat stroke include “hot, red and dry skin; changes in consciousness; rapid or weak pulse; and rapid, shallow breathing.”
Those affected by heat stroke, or those who believe someone else is suffering from it, should call 911.
