A Columbus man could be facing nearly five years in prison after allegedly driving into a building with his infant son in the vehicle.
The Union County Grand Jury has indicted Avery Lee Boone, 24, of Columbus. Boone is charged with two counts of vandalism and one count each of endangering children, obstructing official business and resisting arrest.
According to court documents, about 1:46 a.m. Feb. 23, Marysville Police Department was contacted by a resident of the Meadows Apartments. The caller told police that someone in a black GMC truck was trying to run over a woman.
According to court documents, Boone allegedly “drove the vehicle over the parking blocks and into the apartment building.”
He then backed out and drove through the parking lot, squealing the tires.
Witnesses said Boone then got into a physical confrontation with his girlfriend, who is also the mother of his child, outside of the vehicle.
Police officers and others reported witnessing Boone repeatedly “shoving and grabbing” the woman.
When police attempted to arrest Boone, he verbally and physically resisted.
According to court documents, Boone “refused to comply with orders given, attempted to walk away, and physically attempted to prevent law enforcement from taking him into custody.”
Boone tensed his arms, trying to keep officers from being able to get his hands behind his back for proper handcuffing. He also allegedly, “attempted to throw officer’s hands off him as they were escorting him to the front of the police cruiser,” according to court documents.
According to court documents, law enforcement officials determined, “Boone was intoxicated based on statements made on scene.”
During the investigation, it was discovered that while Boone was driving through the parking lot and into the building, he had his 8-month-old son in the rear of the truck.
Eventually it was determined that the woman had rented the vehicle from a car rental company.
As a result of allegedly driving into the building, Boone broke several pillars art the apartment complex, damaged the brick facade as well as vinyl siding, and damaged the landscape of the apartments.
