The date is set for Union County’s annual event honoring fallen law enforcement officers.
This year’s In the Line of Duty Memorial Ceremony will be held Thursday, May 16 at 7 p.m. on the courthouse lawn. According to a release from the Sheriff’s Office, the tribute will remember three peace officers: Sheriff Forest S. Hager, Sergeant Roger Beekman, and Sheriff Harry Wolfe.
Sheriff Hager died in the line of duty on Sept. 23, 1927, Sergeant Beekman died Sept. 19, 1979 and Sheriff Wolfe was killed on Jan. 21, 1982 while investigating a burglar alarm, the release stated.
The Sheriff’s Office encourages community members to “Please attend in honor of peace officers who have died in the line of duty and those who continue to protect and serve our great community.”
The master of ceremonies this year is Lieutenant Molly Harris of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Harris has served 21 years with the Highway Patrol and has been post commander for the Marysville post for the past six years.
The Jonathan Alder High Society Show Choir will provide vocals for the national anthem and “America the Beautiful.”
Lieutenant Rudy Zupanc of the OSP will play “Taps” and the OSP honor guard will post the colors for the memorial.
Marysville Division of Fire’s Michael Montgomery will play the bagpipes during the ceremony.
“Officers from all area agencies will participate in the ceremony as a tribute to those who have given their lives and to honor their dedication for service,” the release stated.
The release also said in the event of inclement weather, the ceremony would be moved into Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium at 233 West. Sixth Street.
