Maddox Harvey, left, learns how to safely navigate traffic with the help of volunteer high school student Ashton Schmutz, right, at a Safety Town lesson at Navin Elementary School Wednesday. Safety Town is a week-long training program that helps children learn important life skills before they reach kindergarten, such as crossing the street and obeying traffic laws. In the pictured exercise, children ride tricycles through a miniature town set up in the school’s gymnasium. This is the third year of a new Safety Town program being taught to children through a cooperation of the Union County Health Department, Union County Sheriff’s Office and other local agencies. The morning group is set to graduate at 11:15 a.m. Friday and the afternoon group will do so at 3:15 p.m. Friday.
