Two local residents are safe after a fire destroyed their home in Magnetic Springs this morning.
“It had a pretty good jump on us,” said Leesburg Township Fire Chief John Cook.
At about 8:45 a.m., authorities got a report of a mobile home on fire at the corner of Fountain Avenue and South Main Street.
According to Cook, an elderly couple occupied the home.
“There were no injuries,” Cook said. “They got out okay.”
According to Cook, the Red Cross will assist the couple in the coming weeks.
Cook said the fire is still under investigation. He said there may have been oxygen tanks in the home that made the fire worse, but authorities are not yet sure what caused the fire.
“We don’t know yet, but we’re going to look into that,” Cook said.
The fire eventually spread to an adjacent structure, and trees next to a window on the house briefly caught fire. Much of Route 37 and Main Street were closed while authorities extinguished and investigated the fire.
Cook said fires in mobile homes are like fires anywhere else.
“It just depends on the condition inside,” Cook said. “We haven’t been able to get in to see what was actually going on.”
Leesburg Township Fire Department officials were assisted at the scene by several other agencies, including Allen Township, the Northern Union County Fire Department, Liberty Township, Marysville and the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
“We just appreciate everybody coming to help,” Cook said.
