A local man who allegedly broke into a woman’s home wanting to “snuggle” with her has been indicted.
The Union County Grand Jury has indicted David A. Downey, 49, of 16637 Wheeler Green Road. Downey is charged with one count of burglary and one count of petty theft.
According to court documents, about 9:14 p.m., Jan. 1, Downey allegedly broke into a woman’s home on Wheeler Green Road.
“She was not home at the time,” said Union County Prosecutor Dave Phillips.
He said the victim was “probably familiar” with Downey but didn’t really know him.
“He allegedly proceeded to take a shower in her shower, eat her food, lay in her bed and go through her drawers and closets.”
Court documents said he left the home “in disarray.”
Phillips said Downey intended to “surprise” the woman by cleaning her house.
“He said he was hoping to snuggle with her as a reward,” Phillips said.
The next day, Downey was arrested at a local golf course. He had allegedly driven his vehicle onto the course, causing “extensive damage” to the cart path and to one of the fairways, according to court documents.
“Mr. Downey then went to the clubhouse and broke the west window with a flashlight,” according to court documents.
He allegedly went through the window and got into the clubhouse. He was arrested inside the clubhouse, “behind the bar.”
After an investigation, deputies offered to take Downey for a voluntary mental health evaluation.
“David did not stay at the hospital and instead walked away,” Phillips said.
The prosecutor said that Downey’s actions “created a condition of fear” in the victim and her family.
Downey has been released on $5,000 bond and is set to be arraigned Feb. 9.
If convicted, Downey could face more than eight years in prison.
Prosecutors have dropped charges of vandalism, criminal trespassing and possessing criminal tools stemming from the alleged golf course break-in, noting in court documents that the case is “to be indicted.”
