Marysville Early College High School (MECHS) officials acted quickly Wednesday when one student overheard another discussing a school shooting.
According to an email sent to parents, two students came to a “trusted adult” at the MECHS Wednesday morning and said they overheard a student talking about a school shooting.
“The staff member came to me right away and we enacted our school safety plan,” said MECHS Principal Ken Chaffin in an email. “As a part of that plan, we immediately contacted the Marysville Police Department and began our investigation with local law enforcement.”
Chaffin said in the email that officials have found no reason to suspect the student in question ever intended to harm any other students or faculty. Officials were unable to comment on whether the student received any discipline.
“We are following the district and building protocols outlined in our code of conduct, and we are making sure we are thorough,” Chaffin wrote.
The school did not go into a lockdown during the investigation, according to officials.
Chaffin said the district intends to update parents with new, pertinent information as it becomes available. He said at this point, the district has followed school procedures and the student code of conduct.
“School safety is and will continue to be our #1 priority. It is of vital importance that every student and staff member in our building need to not only be safe, but also feel safe,” Chaffin wrote. “This is an excellent reminder to talk with your son/daughter about the importance of telling a trusted adult when they hear something or see something that gives them concern.”
