The North Union Board of Education traveled to Marion to tour the Tri-River Career Center as part of its February meeting.
Many North Union students attend Tri-Rivers to receive career training. The board is invited yearly to see the facilities. Board member Jean Wedding was absent from the meeting.
Charles Spielman, superintendent of Tri-Rivers was unable to attend the meeting, so he asked Richard George, a Richwood resident and an instructor at Tri-Rivers to host the event.
The board accepted the resignation of Tim Monroe as a bus driver, effective Feb. 9, as he accepted a position with the Village of Richwood.
The board voted to employ, having no cerificated applicants: Jerry Sparks, high school varsity track coach; Penny Cunningham, high school girls varsity track assistant coach; Corey Lyles as high school baseball varsity assistant coach; Logan Martino, high school softball junior varsity head coach; Terry Setser, high school softball varsity assistant coach, and Wyatt Hall, high school sound technician.
The following certificated staff were hired on a one-year limited expiring supplemental contract – Dawn Draper, high school varsity girls softball coach; Fred Holsinger, high school assistant varsity boys track coach; Josh Sowder, high school varsity baseball assistant junior varsity coach (splitting the salary); Kelsey Baughman, middle school track coach; Jennifer Willis, summer school/summer credit recovery; Patrick Allen, film club.
Marcus Caplin is going to be working with Josh Sowder, sharing duties as high school varsity baseball assistant as junior varsity coach and splitting the position’s salary.
Volunteers were approved for the 2017-2018 school year. Those approved are Steve Allen, high school varsity girls softball; Kelsea Marvin, high school varsity girls softball; Wendy Wilson, high school junior varsity girls softball and Kierston Longstreth will be a parent volunteer as needed in classrooms or as overnight trip supervisor.
The board also hired Wilson as a school bus driver, on a limited expiring non-certificated contract for the rest of the 2017-2018 school year;
Breanna Nauman was approved as a middle school aide for the 2017-2018 school year.
The board approved the following overnight trips – sixth graders to attend Heartland Outdoor Environmental School, located at 3201 County Road 225, Marengo, from May 21 through May 23; choir members will attend the Tiffin Promusic Festival April 13-14 and the National A Cappella Convention in Memphis, Tennessee April 26-28; high school boys basketball team to travel to the San Diego Surf ‘n Slam, Dec. 26, 2018-Jan. 1, 2019.
The board approved a job description for a Nurse Instructor for the health science program.
It was announced that the board of education approved board members of the Richwood-North Union Public Library. They are Greg Ballinger, Carl Conrad, Linda Davis, Connie Davis, Richard George, Margo Shipp and Martha Speyer.
The next monthly meeting of the North Union Board was set for Monday, March 19, at North Union High School. The public is invited to attend the 6:30 p.m. meeting.
