The North Union Board of Education held a special meeting Monday to handle several items to come before the board, which included the resignation of high school principal Janel Chapman.
Chapman has served as principal for the past five years at North Union. She has been instrumental in increasing academic performance, led the creation of the career pathways, created opportunities for student internships, and worked with her staff to improve student behavior and social emotional health.
School Superintendent Rich Baird stated “Janel has done wonderful work with our staff and students that will have long-lasting benefits to our community. We wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors.”
Chapman has been hired as high school principal in the Fairbanks Local Schools. Her resignation with North Union is effective July 31, 2021.
Baird has begun the search for the next high school principal. Currently, they are screening candidates for that position and have asked for the community’s input by survey.
The district has sent out an email notification asking the community to fill out a survey, asking what traits and talents are important to you in our next principal. To access the survey form, go online to https://forms.gle/sfRVs2dJgNoHCRfz9.
A team of administrators, community, and staff will conduct interviews to narrow the candidates the week of April 26, 2021. Then an opportunity for the community, staff, students, and parents to participate in the interview process will take place the first week of May with finalists.
