For the first time in more than 10 years, a mock crash was held at Triad High School on Wednesday. The event was sponsored by the Triad High School Drive Smart program with the assistance of the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, North East Champaign County Fire District, Careflight, Vernon Family Funeral Home and Maine’s Towing and Recovery. The event replicated a car crash where a fellow student is killed by an impaired driver. The production included a student being flown from the scene by a medical helicopter and another being arrested for impaired driving. The presentation concluded with a speaker offering students her experiences in losing a child to a drunk driver. In the photo above, sheriff and fire crew members work to extract one victim of the crash as another is shown after being thrown through a windshield.
