The Union County Sheriff’s Office is hosting its 10-week Citizens Sheriff’s Academy on Monday nights this fall at the Union County Commissioners Hearing Room at 233 W. 6th St. in Marysville.
Classes are held from 6-8:30 p.m. on Sept. 13, Sept. 20, Sept. 27, Oct. 4, Oct. 12 (Tuesday night exception), Oct. 18, Oct. 25, Nov. 1, Nov. 8 and Nov. 15. Graduation from the academy is scheduled for Nov. 22.
Sheriff Jamie Patton and his deputies will provide instruction about the history of the Union County Sheriff’s Office, crime prevention, communications and 9-1-1, criminal law, patrol procedures, officer safety, self-defense, traffic stops, domestic violence, the criminal justice system, K-9 and special response team, drug and criminal investigations, building searches and understanding use of force.
Although the curriculum and teaching methods are similar to the traditional law enforcement academy, the classes are not designed to train an academy participant as a deputy sheriff.
Academy participants must be at least 18 years old as well as live or work in Union County.
The deadline to apply for the Citizens Sheriff’s Academy is Aug. 12.
