Harold Burns, 92, of Marysville and formerly of Milford Center died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2019 at Walnut Crossing following an extended illness.
He loved his family, farming and most of all, serving the Lord. He entered the Army toward the end of World War II and after his discharge married Viola Mader on June 20, 1948.
They lived on the family farm situated on the Darby Plains and named Darby Maple Farm for its location and the large maple trees that surrounded the family home. He first worked the farm, noted for registered Guernsey cattle, with his father and brothers, and later with two of his nephews.
He faithfully served the church he attended his entire life, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chuckery. He was also a member of Ohio Farm Bureau, Ohio Guernsey Breeders and the Union County Developmental Disability Board.
After retirement, he volunteered for over 25 years, many of them with his wife, with Meals on Wheels and at the Morey Center information desk. In recognition of his service, he was inducted into the 2000 Central Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame.
He was born March 18, 1927 near Milford Center to the late Arthur C. and Clara Rausch Burns. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Martin, Richard and Dean Burns; sisters-in-law, Norma and Betty Burns; and brothers-in-law, Truman Nicol, Ted Kaltenbach and Ed Fladt.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Viola Mader Burns; his children, Nancy (Paul) Coe, Steven and Kevin Burns; and his sisters, Dorothy Nicol and Evelyn Fladt. He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Krista Oakley, Eric Coe, Jeremy (Megan) Burns and Tiffany Blair; 9 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and the many friends he met throughout his life.
Calling hours are Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2019 from 4-8 p.m. at Ingram Funeral Home and on Sept. 18, 2019 from 10-11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. followed by burial at the church cemetery. The Rev. Paul Schlueter will officiate.
Memorial contributions in his honor may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Loving Care Hospice or Meals on Wheels in care of Ingram Funeral Home, which is assisting the family.
