Showalter apologizes for error
Park Committee Chair George Showalter apologized to Council members and
to the staff at the Union Soil and Water Conservation District
(USWCD)for his statements made to The Richwood Gazette staff at the
Village Council meeting held Monday, April 23.
According to Showalter, the statement that  "experts from the USWCD
state that if the lake's banks are not supported, in ten to twelve
years, the lake could become a wetlands" was incorrect. The USWCD never
made the statement, he did.

Sheriff to crack down on underage drinking parties
Union County Sheriff Rocky Nelson announced recently that his office
would be stepping up its efforts to fight the growing problem of
underage drinking parties within the county.

Prom night safety, advice for parents and teens
Prom night is probably the most anticipated night of the year for teens
and can be the most dreaded by heir parents. Although most teens think
they know everything about how o stay safe, parents know otherwise.
And, according to safety experts, t will take more than just talk to ensure
a safe evening for all.

Enforcement rules for Smokefree Ohio start May 3
After a sixty-five day process, which included public comments, a public
hearing, and a final hearing before the Joint Committee on Agency Rule
Review, the rules of enforcement and implementation submitted by the
Ohio Department of Health have been approved and will take effect  on
Thursday, May 3.

NUCFD seeks new fire chief
The Board of Trustees of the Northern Union County Fire and EMS is
looking for a new leader. Board President, Steve Patton released this
statement: "We, as the board have every confidence in Chief German as a
paramedic and a firefighter. Our philosophies about leadership of the
department differ and we have opted not to renew his contract, which
expires May 31, 2007. He will continue to serve the district in the same
capacity for approximately 90 days. Chief German is very dedicated to
the fire and EMS department and we appreciate his service. He will most
likely still be seen in the community serving our emergency needs. We
value Chief German and his family and are making every effort to make
this a smooth transition."

National Day of Prayer set
The National Day of Prayer will be observed in Richwood on Thursday, May
3 at noon in front of the town hall with a short session of prayer for
our nation, its leaders at the national, state and local levels and for
our troops. All are welcome.

Parent Mentor Program is established at North Union

 Mr. Ed Kapel, Director of Special Education, and Linda  Gorsuch, Parent
Mentor Volunteer addressed members of the North Union Board of Education
regarding NU's Parent Mentor Program  during the group's regular meeting
held April 16.

Richwood Bank holds shareholders meeting
Three directors were elected at the Richwood Banking Co.'s stockholders
meeting last week. Elected to three-year terms were Homer R. Viers,
David R. Boerger and John J. Wiley. All three have served previously on
the bank's board. The remaining directors include Dan J. Anderson, Nancy
K. Hoffman, Richard A. Johnston, Jeffrey S. Marsh, William L. Parrott,
Chad L. Hoffman and Kyle Stofcheck, who is the chairman of the board.

North Union schools present Spring Art and Music Festival
North Union students have prepared all year and are ready to show off
their talents at the 2007 Spring Art and Music Festival. The event will
be held on Saturday, April 28 at North Union Elementary and High School.

Richwood Council deals with park issues

Richwood Village Council dealt with Richwood Park issues at its regular
session Monday evening at the administration office. Council member Wade
McCalf was absent.

Body found in burned house on Lingrell Road

Union County law enforcement officials found a body inside the charred
remnants of a large house fire in Washington Township Monday.
"It appears to be an apparent suicide at this point," Union County
Coroner Dr. David Applegate said late Monday.

Personal Needs Pantry opens  for needy area residents

The Richwood community rises to the challenge of helping those in need.
Once again, the challenge has been met, with help from Jo Ann Stillings
and members of the Home Mission Committee.

Charlene Jolliff retires from Richwood Gazette
Charlene Jolliff has officially retired from The Richwood Gazette after
nearly 30 years in the newspaper industry. Her retirement was effective
April 1.

Community mourns loss of  local physician

Dr. Charles W. Holcomb, long-time Richwood general practitioner, died
Saturday, March 31, after a brief illness. Holcomb, who retired in 1989,
was 84.

Two local bloodmobiles net ninety-five productive units
Two successful blood drives were held recently resulting in 36
productive units collected at the Richwood First United Methodist Church
on Mon-day, March 12 and 59 productive units collected at North Union
High School on Friday, March 16.

MHUC recognized as Public Health Partner of  the Year
The Union County Health Department recognized  Memorial Hospital of
Union County as the 2006 Public Health Partner of the Year recntly
during the District Advisory Council's annual meeting.
