This year's 116th Richwood Independent Fair offers
exciting entertainment, food and lots of activities for fairgoers
throughout the six-day event, Wednesday, Aug. 27 to Monday, Sept. 1.

Council wants to expand park Solons apply for playground grant

Richwood Village Council member have considered expanding the Richwood
Park area and for weeks have pondered increasing the area by purchasing
three acres that are for sale. At the Monday, Aug. 25 meeting, solons
are moving closer to that possibility.

School board updated on building projects

North Union Superintendent Rick Smith provided board members with an
update on the renovations at the high school and the construction of the
new middle school when they met in regular session on Monday, Aug. 25.
President Jon Hall was absent. A reception for new and retiring
employees took place prior to the meeting.

Local educator experiences Army Basic Training
Recently, a group of 30 educators took time this summer to attend
an Educator's Tour, at Fort ackson, S.C. The group of teachers,
administrators and counselors included North Union High School's
Marcia Livingston.

Richwood Fair promises six-days of fun
The 116th Richwood Independent
Fair is set to begin Wednesday, Aug. 27 for a six-day run through Labor
Day, Sept. 1, with opening ceremonies to be held at 7 a.m. Animal
weigh-ins, demonstrations and judgings will take place throughout the day.

School Board approves contracts
North Union Board of Education members met Monday, Aug. 13.

Lydic crowned Miss Popcorn Festival
Emily Lydic captured the title of
Miss Marion Popcorn Festival 2008, Saturday evening, August 9, during
competition at Harding High School. Nearly $3,000 in scholarship dollars
and $3,000 in in-kind scholarships were awarded before a near capacity crowd.

NUAC to host OSU tailgate party
It's football season and NUAC (North
Union Athletic Complex) wants to help you get in the spirit! Mark your
calendar for Saturday, Sept. 13 when The Ohio State Buckeyes take on the
USC Trojans in California. To help cheer on the Buckeyes, NUAC will
host a tailgate event on their lot at 16 S. Franklin St., beginning at p.m.

Council members discuss two village renewal levies

Mayor Bill Nibert discussed the renewal levy with council members when
they met in regular session on Monday, Aug. 11. Council members Jason
Beeney and Scott Jerew were absent.

School construction on schedule

All the construction projects taking place on the North Union Schools'
campus are progressing nicely. Both the high school and middle school
projects are on time and on budget.

Hundreds gather to get answers about egg farm

Hi-Q officials repeatedly offered one main assurance to hundreds of
Union County residents packed into Karen's Event Center on Thursday.

NUAC releases figures from recent Springenfest
Board members of the North Union Athletic Complex (NUAC) recently met
to discuss the 31st annual Springenfest event, held this past June.
Figures for the two-day festival netted a profit of over $9,700. The
less than average profits were attributed to a two-hour rainfall, which
halted activities on Saturday afternoon. However, many volunteers dug
right in, wiping away the rain from tables and chairs. And, in the
spirit of Springenfest, crowds returned in the early evening to enjoy
fun and entertainment.

North Union graduate develops patent

Even with today's technology, someone is often trying to find a way to
access your personal information.

Area youths volunteer for Katrina Relief
Summer vacations make you think about camping, going to the beach, or
playing summer sports. However, Deryk Van Sickle said he could not wait
until he turned 14, because he would finally be old enough to go with
the United Methodist Volunteers in Mission Group to help with Katrina
Relief. He asked his friend, Sam Bevis, if he would like to come along
and spend a week in D'Iberville, Miss. helping with clean-up projects.
Van Sickle is the son of Christina Stenger and Bevis is the son of Ken
and Teresa Bevis. Both boys will be freshmen, at North Union High
School, this fall.

Ohio BMV to change vehicle registration procedure

Effective August 1, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) implemented
a new measure to reduce the possibility for fraudulent motor vehicle
registrations.

Hi-Q Egg officials to address questions at meeting
Hi-Q Egg Products has filed an application with the Ohio Department of
Agriculture to build the nation's largest single-site egg factory, in
this area. They plan to add eight million birds in the same three mile
area that is already home to over three million chickens.

Magnetic Springs Mini-Fest event set
Organizers are putting the final touches on the Third Annual Magnetic
Springs Mini-Fest, set for Saturday, Aug. 9.

North Union Cooperative challenges churches
United Methodist Churches in the North Union Cooperative are challenging
each other to see which church can bring in the most food and monetary
donations to help restock shelves of the Richwood Emergency Assistance
Program (REAP) food pantry.

Next of kin notification law helps protect families

Ohio's new next-of-kin notification law, which went into effect August
1, will prove to be a useful tool for helping families protect elderly
relatives by assisting emergency services personnel and others locate
family and friends during a crisis situation, said Kathleen Anderson,
executive director of the Ohio Council for Home Care.
