Lesser charge accepted in starvation case

The son and grandaughter-in-law of a former Richwood woman have pleaded
guilty to failing to provide care for Evelyn Cox, who died June 30,
2003, at age 73.

North Union Board of Education approves supplemental contracts
The North Union Board of Education approved the following contracts when
they met in regular session on Monday, May 19.

College students know that it takes a lot of hard work to finishing
their degree before pursuing a career. So when a chance of a lifetime
became available for Casey (Gray) Daum, she did not hesitate to take
advantage of the opportunity.

Superintendent presented Excellence Awards at the school board meeting

North Union Superintendent Rick Smith presented Board of Education
Excellence Awards to nominated students as well as a staff member when
they met in regular session on Monday, May 19. A retirement reception
was held prior to the board meeting to honor teachers Carol Lewis, June
McDonough, Nancy Wiley and transportation director Claude Tidd.

Veterans encouraged to participate in Memorial Day events
VFW Post 870 and American Legion Post 40 members invite  area veterans
(war or peacetime) to participate in one or all of the Memorial Day
events to be held throughout the North Union District, on Monday, May
26.

Union County families on the brink of homelessness

Note: This is the second of a two-part series that deals with the
homeless in Union County.
Homeless Prevention
When The Salvation Army established a goal for its Homeless Prevention
program at the end of 2006, they hoped to serve 160 households over a
two-year period. In 2007 alone, they served 261 households! Two-thirds
of those households included children.

You live with uncertainty. You work 40 hours a week, knowing it won't be
enough to pay the bills. Especially the rent. Maybe you're newly
divorced or separated. A victim of mental illness. Your children are too
young to help.

Council accepts resignation
Village council members accepted the resignation of councilman Wade
McCalf at the Monday, May 12 regular meeting. McCalf stated he may be
relocating and did not want to impede council's progress of village
affairs. Serving approximately 10 years on council, he appreciated
working with council members over the years, and wanted only the best
for the village.

Click it or Ticket - you've been warned!
Members of the Richwood Police Department will be participating in a
national survey of how many drivers use their seat belts while on the
roads and highways. On Friday, May 16, during the hours of 8 to 10 a.m.
and again from 4 to 6 p.m., officers will stand in the intersection of
Franklin and Ottawa Sts.  calculating the people using and not using seat belts.

Richwood Clean-up Day is here
Richwood Clean-up Day is Saturday, May 17.  Collection site is 33 Cherry
St. at the Salvage One business, which is located west of Grove St.
Residents may drop items between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. This is
the first year this new site will be utilized.

Lessons learned in shooting simulation

Many lessons were learned Wednesday in the North Union High School, but
it wasn't the students being educated.

There's a new student in class
It usually takes several days for a new student to be accepted in the
classroom, but not for Nestor; he was accepted when he walked into the
room.

School board members received free education
Members of the Northwest Neighborhood Alliance attended the special
school board meeting Monday, May 5, to educate school board members of
the impending addition of eight million chickens within the school
district.
