Candidates vie for Union County Prosecutor
Union County voters are expected to flock to the polls on Tuesday, Nov.
4, to decide who will become the next President of the United States.
This election will be historic, as for the first time, either an
African-American, Barack Obama will be elected President, or a woman,
Sarah Palin, will be chosen as Vice President. Obama and running mate
Joe Biden are the Democratic candidates and Presidential candidate John
McCain and Palin are Republicans.

Richwood Police Chief Monte Asher provides council with an update
Richwood Police Chief Monte Asher provided council members with an
update when they met in regular session on Monday, Oct. 27.  Council
member Jason Beeney was absent.
Asher informed council members that he and Fiscal Officer Don Jolliff
have worked on the budget for the police department. The department is
cutting back on overtime. They have also been placing two officers in
one patrol car; ways to save the department some money. Asher informed
council that he won't be doing any hiring until January, 2009 and that
the department is going to sign a contract with Occupational Health for
drug tests and physicals for the officers.

County launches new animal control truck
Union County Dog Warden Mary Beth Hall now has a new truck, specifically
designed for transporting dogs.

Richwood Park transforms into haunted house
Keep your ears and eyes open as you walk around Richwood Park Friday and
Saturday, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, as ghosts and goblins will be lurking
around Richwood Lake.

Several issues/levies to be decided by voters on November 4

  Voters in northern Union County will have an opportunity to cast their
ballots on several levies and issues when they go to the polls on
Tuesday, Nov. 4.

  Board moves forward with the Ohio Performance Assessment Pilot Project
grant application

 North Union Superintendent Rick Smith provided board members with
information on the Ohio Performance Assessment Pilot Project, when they
met in regular session on Monday, Oct. 20.

Health Department hosts Hallow Fest
Union County  Health Department (UCHD), will sponsor a Hallow Fest and
safe trick-or-treat for children, ages 12 and under, in Richwood, on
Saturday, Oct. 25. The event will be held downtown, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Richwood Police offer safety tips for Trick or Treaters
Trick or Treating can be one of the greatest times of the year for
children. The Richwood Police Department has a few tips for parents and
children to make this a safe and fun-filled night.

Two cooperatives consolidate

On August 28, 2008, stockholders of Champaign Landmark, Inc. of Urbana
and The Farmers Commission of Upper Sandusky, approved the consolidation
of the two cooperatives to create a new business named "Heritage
Cooperative, Inc." Consolidation will take effect September 1, 2009.

Council discusses brush pick-up and biodegradable lawn bags

Village Administrator Lin Hensley discussed brush pick-up and the usage
of recyclable biodegradable lawn bags for loose leaves when council met
in regular session on Monday, Oct. 13.

Union County Health Dept. announces flu clinic schedule
Union County Health Department (UCHD), in partnership with Memorial
Hospital of Union County, has announced the 2008-2009 adult flu clinic
schedule. Among the scheduled clinics is once again a drive-thru clinic
at the Union County Fairgrounds.

American Red Cross wants you to "give the gift of life"

disease or from an accident. It is very important to replenish this gift
of life.

Annual fall festival to benefit Heifer International Group

The fourth Annual Heifer International Fall Festival will be held at the
Richwood Fairgrounds, on Sunday, Oct. 12, from 2 to 5 p.m. Admission is
free and activities for all ages will ensure fun for everyone.

Local residents open catering business
Curt Beckley grew up helping his father, Earl Beckley, at the Elbow Bar,
formerly an establishment in Richwood, or at the local pool hall, which
was located where the VFW is now headquartered. His years of experience
in barbecuing and cooking has led him into a new adventure with his
wife, Jackie, owning their own catering business.

North Union School District to place renewal levy on November ballot
North Union Local School District will have a renewal levy on the
Tuesday, Nov. 4 ballot. This is a renewal of an emergency levy, that
generates $210,000 per year.

Homecoming Snake Dance Set
North Union students will take to the streets Wednesday, Oct. 8 for
their annual Homecoming Snake Dance celebration. Fun will begin as class
floats, North Union Marching Band and anyone wishing to join in, will
gather at the Richwood Park at 6:30 p.m. to organize. At 7:30 p.m., the
parade will travel from the intersection of S. Franklin and E. Bomford
St., north towards the high school. Everyone is encouraged to come out
and help cheer on the Wildcat athletes as they head to the high school
at 401 N. Franklin St. to a bonfire rally. Wildcat football team will
take on the Elgin Comets, Friday, Oct. 10 with the kick-off at 7 p.m.
Pre-game ceremonies of crowning royalty will begin at 6:30 p.m.

 North Union student participates in Civil Air Patrol
Have you ever wanted to serve your country, but you weren't sure how?
You can serve the United States as a civilian volunteer of the Air
Force's auxiliary, the Civil Air Patrol (CAP). Cody Howell, a student at
North Union, is one of several area youth that has taken the challenge.

School explores ideas of campus wear
North Union Superintendent Rick Smith addressed a crowd of parents,
students and community members Monday, Sept. 29, about concerns from the
teaching staff in regards to the district's dress code. Many teachers
lose valuable teaching time  when they have to send students to the
office because of inappropriate clothes worn to school. Smith decided to
invite the public to discuss these concerns and to find a solution.
Campus wear is a concept of having  certain types of clothing acceptable
to wear to school, such as jeans or khaki slacks and certain colors or
styles of shirt. Uniforms would mean every student would wear the same
exact clothes.

Fish Fry kicks off Fire Prevention Week
  Northern Union County Fire and EMS District (NUCFD) Fire Chief, Randy
Riffle, reminds the public that Fire Prevention Week will be observed
from Sunday, Oct. 5 through Saturday, Oct. 11. This year's theme is
"Prevent Home Fires."

County Health Department's Drive-thru Flu Shot Clinic, where you can get
your annual flu vaccination without leaving the comfort of your car.
