National Robotics Challenge
An innovative remote-controlled roto-tiller earned the top innovation
prize at the 2009 National Robotics Challenge, where more than 280
robots competed in a variety of robotic events.

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) recently confirmed a case of
swine flu involving a nine-year old boy from Lorain County. The
patient is considered to have a mild case of the disease and is
recovering at home.

Public invited to preview NU prom
The North Union Junior-Senior Prom, sponsored by the Class of 2010,
will be held Saturday, May 2 at North Union High School. The theme,
“Back In Black,” is based upon the popular rock and roll song by the
group AC/DC.

School board discusses proposed education plan
North Union hopes to receive additional money from Gov. Ted
Strickland’s new education plan, but it is anybody’s guess as to how
much.

Students compete in mock trial competition
North Union Middle School students recently competed in a mock trial
competition held at the Ohio Judicial Center and Supreme Court
Building in downtown Columbus. The Middle School Mock Trial program,
sponsored by the Ohio Center for Law Related Education (OCLRE), is
literature based and gives students the opportunity to act as a
witness, judge, attorney and jury as they adjudicate cases
constructed around books commonly read in Ohio’s middle schools. The
activity teaches students critical analysis, persuasion, questioning
skills, character development, logical thinking and principles of law.

The 5th Annual Brandy Winfield Memorial Poker Run is set
Brandy Winfield was well known in the Richwood area, as he, his wife
Sara and two sons, had lived on N. Franklin St. for a few years. He
was a volunteer for the Northern Union County Fire and EMS Dept.,
active with the Richwood Police Dept. volunteering with the cadet
program and community policing events.

Union County Military Family Support Group meets
At a recent meeting of The Union County Military Family Support
Group, many items of interest were presented. Among them was
information from Dale Bartow, executive director of the Veterans
Service Office. He reiterated the many ways that the Veterans Office
can provide aid to Union County veterans. A few examples are: help
with emergency financial assistance, filling out VA forms and
applying for VA benefits. They also provide transportation to VA or
VA-referred facilities.

Council discusses grass and water problems
At Monday night’s meeting, Richwood Village Council held a discussion on the need for a civilian position within the police department.

McKendree U.M.C. closes, end of an era
Members of the McKendree United Methodist Church, 28677 Route 739, in York Center, have made the difficult decision to close their doors. Recently, the McKendree church has combined with Community U.M.C. and the new charge has been named York Center United Methodist Church.

UCBDD creates position to support families
The position of Family Involvement Coordinator became a permanent position at the March board meeting of the Union County Board of
Developmental Disabilities (UCBDD). The creation of this position was a result of the collaborative effort of several local agencies. The
Council for Union County Families, Department of Jobs And Family Services, Union County Health Department, Union County Board of
Mental Health, and Help Me Grow were among the agencies who worked toward the creation of this position.

New pricing for mail service begins May 11
The United States Postal Service is announcing new prices for some mail service, beginning Monday, May 11. Under the new system, prices
for services, such as first-class mail, are adjusted each year and are in line with the change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Each
February, the postal officials announces the new rates, which become effective each May.

Horse Association released information Monday of the passing of Dennis E. “Denny” Hales, executive vice president of OQHA on Sunday,
March 29. He died at Genesis Bethesda Hospital in Zanesville, from a sudden heart attack.
