Hixson and McNamee Farms honored at SWCD meeting
Featured during the recent Union SWCD annual meeting at the Der
Dutchman Restaurant in Plain City, were the presentations of Union
SWCD conservation awards to John Hixson and McNamee Farms.

Council wants to control geese problems at Richwood Park
While some may find the geese at the Richwood Lake to be graceful,
amusing and even calming, a village council member has another
description.

Richwood Fair brings a variety of entertainment
The 117th Richwood Fair will attract fairgoers with a wide variety of
fun and entertainment when it opens Wednesday, Sept. 2 and runs
through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7.

New plaque to honor veterans who have served our country

It has been important that through the changes of modernization that
has taken place in the North Union School District that we do not
forget our history in the process. At the old Richwood High School
and later the North Union Middle School Memorial Football Field hung
two granite plaques in honor of service men/women and veterans who
have served our country from this area. The plaques read: (left
side) “Honoring the Men and Women of this community who served in the
Armed Forces of the United States in World Wars I and II.” And
(right side) “In memory of all military Veterans who served their
country.” Leaders from the American Legion Post 40, Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post 870, Village of Richwood and the school system
came together to determine how these might be preserved. After some
research, it was determined the plaques could not be safely moved.
Since the school district is keeping the middle school land, it was
determined to leave the structure and the plaques as they stand. The
plaques will not be forgotten as these fields will still be used for
practicing and other events.

Celebrity horse race will highlight final day of Richwood Fair
Many special events are always saved for the final day of the
Richwood Fair. There is a new and unusual event on the docket this
year and it will be held at 1:30 p.m. on the race track.

NU School Board faced with uncertain economic outlook

Faced with an uncertain economic outlook at the state and local
level, North Union is cutting where cuts can be made.
At Monday night’s North Union School Board meeting, treasurer Scott
Maruniak spelled out several strategies the district is putting in
place to make sure the district staves off a budget shortfall for as
long as possible.

Let’s get ready for the Richwood Independent Fair!
Ask any child what happens in the next two weeks and most likely,
they won’t say that school starts (which is does on Aug. 31.) They’ll
tell you the 117th Richwood Fair begins!

Program helps incoming freshman students
The North Union Freshman Academy will be a new program for incoming
freshman at North Union High School. The program is designed to help
freshman make the transition from middle school to the high school
and to help each freshman student succeed and thrive.

Blankets of Hope project to begin
Christmas may still be a few months away, but some residents at the
Richwood Community Apartments are thinking ahead. They have started
their community campaign of donating blankets of hope to wounded
soldiers and veterans.

Council hears from W. Ottawa St. land owners
Richwood Village Council members heard requests from W. Ottawa St.
property owners regarding possibly closing the undeveloped end of W.
Blagove Street during the Monday night meeting. Councilman Jason
Beeney was absent from the meeting.

November General Election filing deadline nears
For those interested in fulfilling their civic duty, by holding a
political position, nominating petitions for candidacy and local
issues and questions, must be filed by the Thursday, Aug. 20, 4 p.m.
deadline.

County military unit to be deployed
The first activation of a military unit out of Union County since
World War II, will take place on Sunday, Aug. 16. One hundred seventy-
one soldiers from Marysville’s Army National Guard’s 585th Military
Police Company will depart for Basra, Iraq. Their mission will be to
train Iraqi Police.

Urgent request for type “O” blood donors
The American Red Cross is in urgent need of type O-negative blood
donors. Locally, the supply of that type has dropped to zero. Central
Ohio needs an average of 100 pints of O-negative blood per day.
During summer trauma season, the supply of type O can be depleted
quickly due to serious injuries requiring transfusions.

One last lesson to learn
Members of the Northern Union County Fire Department (NUCFD) and EMS
squad and other local departments, will train for one last lesson,
Saturday, Aug. 15, at the former North Union Middle School, located
at 16 Norris St. After firefighters train in the facility, it is
scheduled to be demolished sometime at the end of August or early
September.

Park Day festivities deemed a success
It was hard to find a quiet corner of The Richwood Park Sunday, as
several hundred people used nearly every foot of space either
participating in a baseball tournament on every available diamond,
playing on inflatable slides, moon walk, trying to hit a hole in one,
calling out Bingo, enjoying the musical entertainment or sitting
under a tree, eating some delicious food.
