Council creates “wish list” of infrastructure projects

Richwood Village Council members provided Mayor Bill Nibert with 
their “wish list” of infrastructure projects when they met in regular 
session on Monday. Council members Peg Wiley and Jason Beeney were 
absent from the meeting.

2008 year in review of Common Pleas Court
Judge Richard Parrott, in the Common Pleas Court of Union County, has 
submitted information from his office. Cases filed include: 202 
criminal felonies (not including extradition cases arising out of and 
from the Ohio Reformatory for Women), 618 civil cases including 
foreclosures, 253 new divorces and dissolutions and 211 domestic 
cases reopened for purposes of changes of custody, visitation and/or 
support (does not include agreed entries needing court approval).

Public invited to high school renovations dedication
The two year renovation project at North Union High School is nearly 
complete. To celebrate, the North Union School Board invites the 
public to a dedication ceremony on Saturday, Jan. 31.

Three caught breaking into home
One injured in leap from second story window

Despite one man trying to escape by jumping out a second story 
window, police caught three burglary suspects in the act Wednesday, 
Jan. 21.
Richard A. Monroe, 23, of 56 George St. and Bryan D. Beverly, 24, of 
19420 Powderlick Rd., were both arrested for first-degree felony 
aggravated burglary and face a potential ten-year prison sentence.

DeGood-Guy selected for Hall of Pride
Gail DeGood Guy, a 1968 North Union graduate, has been selected as 
this year’s honoree to be inducted into the North Union Hall of 
Pride. The daughter of the late Tommy DeGood and Hilda DeGood Evans, 
also graduated from the University of Maryland, with a degree in 
Business Management.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 870 celebrates 30 years

On January 14, 1979, forty-eight veterans, who served during WWII, 
the Korean or Vietnam wars, chartered a local Post of the National 
Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Ski-a-thon Spectacular set for disabled sports
Richwood area residents, Dave and Tonja Beckley, are inviting the 
community to participate in a fundraising activity. This event 
enhances the quality of life for people with disabilities, both 
physical and developmental.

Jobs shifted in Union County emergency services departments

This year the Union County Emergency Management Agency will undergo a 
shift in leadership.

Band Boosters kick off uniform campaign
The North Union Band Boosters have kicked off a campaign for new band 
uniforms, thanks in part, to a check from the Wal-Mart Foundation for 
$1,000.

Historic covered bridge “for rent”
Beginning in 2009, organizations and individuals will be able to rent 
the Historic Pottersburg Covered Bridge. The bridge will accommodate 
a maximum of 200 people, theatre style.

You can count on the Red Cross, can they count on you?
Recently, a family in Raymond, lost their home to a fire. The couple 
and their dog escaped the blazing home without injury. Immediately,  
responders from the Union Co. American Red Cross arrived to provide 
comfort kits, blankets, lodging, food and clothing to help the 
couple’s recovery from this tragedy.

Richwood Police receive over 200 calls for service in 2008
Richwood Police Chief Monte Asher has released statistics for the 
local police department for 2008.
According to the report, officers received 2,062 calls for service, 
of which 733 required a response by officers and a report to be 
written. These statistics show a 60 percent increase over numbers 
from 2007.

Damage at sewer plant costly
Old Man Winter is playing havoc within the village, as winter is only 
beginning. Village Administrator Lin Hensley informed council of 
severe damage sustained at the sewer plant during the Monday village 
council meeting. Council member Peg Wiley was absent from the meeting.

Preserving The Family Farm will be topic of local workshop
Land Heritage Trust of Union County, will offer a workshop on 
Tuesday, Jan. 27, for farmers who want to keep the farm in the family 
for future generations.

School Board announces upcoming meetings
North Union Local Board of Education is announcing upcoming meetings 
for January and February.

Village official asks drivers to use caution when driving
Village Administrator Lin Hensley said that not only has the price of 
road salt increased in price, the supply is very limited for this 
winter season. Rates have increased nearly  40 percent, causing havoc 
on operating budgets for cities and villages. Union County is no 
exception, but it is somewhat fortunate, compared to other counties 
in the State, in being able to secure bids for salt. Ohio Department 
of Transportation (ODOT) has 25 counties in Ohio without a salt 
contract, forcing those counties to acquire material from other 
garages within their district.

Commissioners appropriated funding for community improvements in 2008

Union County Chamber of Commerce
Annually, the Federal Community Development Block Grant Program 
(CDBG), provides funding to Union County for public infrastructure 
improvements. The Union County Commissioners then allocate the 
funding to our communities based on needs, enabling them to invest 
into streets, roads, sanitary sewer, water, and other projects. “The 
CDGB program allows the Commissioners to support community 
development throughout Union County” said County Commissioner Gary Lee.

North Union High School Principal Eric Holman informed board members 
about the Freshman Academy when they met in regular session on Monday.

The year 2009 arrives, bringing hope for a better economy
Many residents gladly said good-bye to 2008, a year that brought the 
United States into an economic recession. Voters elected a Democrat 
Barack Obama as President of the United States, replacing Republican 
George W. Bush, who has been in the white house for the past eight
