Council hears request for construction of senior housing A Richwood
area
man approached village council Monday night with plans to
construct senior
housing in the area of Route 47 East.
Andrew Chadwell approached council with
a proposal for the village to
annex eight to 12 acres of land adjacent to
Parrott Implement.
Chadwell requires village water and sewer services to
make the
project plausible.
Hoskins teaches finance in
Kazakhstan
How’s your geography? Do you remember during your school days
learning where the country of Kazakhstan (pronounced Kaz•ak•stan) is
located on the globe? If you graduated prior to 1991, you had never
heard of Kazakhstan, because it didn’t become a country until 1991,
when the Soviet Union dissolved. Richwood resident, John Hoskins,
spent
many years working for theUnited States Government as a Foreign
Service
Officer and in the Food And Agriculture Organization of the
United Nations.
Naturally, during those days, his family traveled with
him to many places
across the globe, living in Viet Nam, Bangkok and
West Africa.
Child
immunization clinic cancelled
Union County Health Department officials have
had to cancel the child
immunization clinic, scheduled for Thursday, July
30 in Richwood.

Old school police training
Final lessons in Leesburg-Magnetic are learned by
officers

The explosion of a small
flash bomb in the former Leesburg-
Magnetic Springs Elementary School
gymnasium Wednesday was followed
by a shock wave of smoke and flame. Then a
mist of dirt fell from the
ceiling. A dozen law enforcement officers
quickly filed into the gymnasium,
pointing high-powered weapons. The school
has been closed for years
and was scheduled for demolition to begin this
week.
Smith cites improvement in year-end school report
North Union
Superintendent Rick Smith gave his annual report to the
board of education
Monday night. Smith noted that despite the fact
that the district appears
stagnate, still sitting on 23 state
standards met out of 30, there is more
going on in the district.
Police Department teams up with Crime
Stoppers
Crime within the village, seems to keep at a steady pace for the
Richwood Police Department. So Police Chief Monte Asher and the
police
force are enlisting extra help.
Annual Park Day event takes place
Sunday, Aug. 2
It’s time to mark your calendar for the annual Richwood Park
Day, set
for Sunday, August 2. The family event is a money maker which
provides funds for updating the popular facilities. The park is
known
for baseball and softball games, swimming, fishing, but once a
year, music
fills the air, children laughing and the aroma of food,
entices the public
to spend a day relaxing with friends and neighbors.
Shop till you
drop in Richwood
The Richwood Area Business Association (RABA) is sponsoring
the
Community Wide Yard Sales this weekend and reminds everyone they can
“shop till you drop” throughout the village and surrounding country
roads Friday and Saturday.

Politicians are often accused of
straddling both sides of the fence
but in one Richwood neighborhood, that
may not be a wise course of
action.
Library board planning for
possible funding cuts
Richwood-North Union Public Library board members used
foresight in
preparing for possible funding cuts from the state, by
reducing costs
by 20 percent. Now they await news from the state
government, to see
if more cuts will be necessary.

see how farming was done years
and years ago.
Local fiscal officer
under investigation
A press release from Union County Sheriff Rocky Nelson’s
office
states that Washington Township Fiscal Officer Valerie Cox, is
under
investigation for alleged financial improprieties.

This is the time of the summer when
residents prepare to clean out
their closets, garages and attics, getting
ready for the Community-
wide Garage Sale weekend.
It’s Union County
Fair time!
Get ready for eight days of fun at the Union County Fair,
beginning
Sunday, July 26 through Sunday, August 2. The youth of the
county
will put their finishing touches on their 4-H and FFA projects and
gardeners will be pampering their produce and floral specimens to be
judged.
Burglaries, thefts and B & Es are on the rise
Richwood Police Chief,
Monte Asher, said that burglaries, thefts and
breaking and enterings within
the village are on the rise, and they
want your help.
During the week of
June 21, two garages within a half block from each
other, were broken into.
Homeowners say the buildings were locked and
there was no evidence of
tampering.
Richwood Community Apartments are asking for more
volunteers
Residents at the Richwood Community Apartments are experiencing a
change in their daily routine.
The board of trustees were faced with a
hard decision that would
affect the residents’ lives. For the past few
years, the building
elevator, which is approximately 37 years old, is
showing its age.
United Church Homes, who manages the senior facility, is
coordinating
efforts to get the elevator operating as quickly as possible.
The
problem is, that residents at the facility don’t know how soon that
will take place.
Ohio Quarter Horse Assn. hires new vice
president
Officials from the Ohio Quarter Horse Assn. (OQHA) has announced
the
addition of Cam Foreman, who will fill the open position of Vice
President. Denny Hales, who had served that position, died suddenly
on
March 29, 2009, from a heart attack, leaving the organization
searching for
a replacement.
Health Department reports a case of TB
The Union County
Health Department has reported that a confirmed case
of Tuberculosis
(commonly called TB) in Union County.
Teen Center receives grant for food and nutrition program
Last Thursday,
county officials announced that Project North Star,
the new teen center in
downtown Richwood, will receive funding from
the American Recovery &
Reinvestment Act of 2009 for food and
nutrition programs. The Richwood
center was bundled into a grant
request for several projects by the
Community Action Organization of
Delaware, Madison & Union Counties.
Federal reviewers approved
Project North Star for two consecutive one-year
awards to be used for
food and nutrition education expenses
only.
May no soldier go unloved
Some residents at The Richwood
Community Apartments, have been busy
trying to make life for soldiers
serving overseas, a little more
comfortable. Their goal is to mail boxes of
personal items to them,
to help ease the pain of being away from the
comforts of home. This
local effort is open to public
participation.
Students to get "hands on" experience
During the
current economic downturn, many individuals are turning
back to simple,
thrifty pleasures, such as home upgrades, car repair
and
gardening.
Local bloodmobile collects 38 productive units
Richwood
First United Methodist Church recently hosted a bloodmobile
where 38
productive units were collected.
