Serbians visit America, learn agricultural practices
For three weeks, ten representatives from Serbia, have been in the
United States observing agricultural techniques. This was made
possible through the Columbus International Program, which was
awarded a grant to run a Community Connections program to enhance and
improve agricultural cooperative efforts in the country of Serbia.

Here4Hope provides education and Web site

A number of our neighbors in Union County attended a two-day
conference in Marysville to better understand what is happening for
people who are feeling suicidal as well as how to support them and
their loved ones through such crises. Here4Hope - the new coalition
addressing social issues affecting our community - presented Dr.
Frank Campbell, executive director of the Crisis Center Foundation
based in Baton Rouge, a world-renowned suicide expert. As a result,
Union County now has a group of volunteers trained to help families
in the aftermath of a suicide or other traumatic death. This LOSS
Team (Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors) will be dispatched by
county coroner Dr. David Applegate, to provide comfort and linkage to
supportive services as quickly as possible after an incident occurs.

Patrol investigates fatal crash
report from Union County Highway Patrol
Union County Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal traffic crash
involving a car and a motorcycle that collided at the intersection of
Route 37 and Boundary Rd., north of Richwood on Sunday, May 24.
Theodore W. Reynolds, 58, of Richwood, was driving a 1984 Honda
Goldwing motorcycle, traveling north on Route 37. Patricia A.
Reynolds, 59, of Richwood was a passenger on the motorcycle. William
R. Bales, 23, of Marion, was driving a 2003 Saturn traveling
eastbound on Boundary Rd. with a passenger, Shawn Bales, 19, also of
Marion.

Beginning Monday, June 1, The Richwood Gazette will observe
new hours of operation; 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

NU Education Association accepts three-year contract
On a night where North Union celebrated excellence within its
district, teachers and administrators agreed to contracts which would
help the district fund future growth.

Be sure to thank a member of your local Emergency Medical Service
squad this week. You may never know when you might need them.

Memorial Day is a day to remember
All community Veterans (war or peactime) are invited to participate
in one or all Memorial Day events, held in the North Union district
on Monday, May 25. A veteran does not have to be a VFW Post 870 or
American Legion Post 40 member, to be a part of the long-time
tradition of paying homage to our fellow comrades who were lost in a
war or passed during peacetime.

Foreign Affairs Day seen from Richwood

(Editor’s Note: John A. Hoskins retired in 1983 from the Agency for
International Development, a part of the State Department. He was a
Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Minister-
Counselor. He had served as a Foreign Service Officer for 22 years
and worked for nine years in the Food and Agriculture Organization of
the United Nations. In 1992, he returned to Richwood to his family
farm.)
It was Foreign Affairs Day once again. This is when the Department of
State invites all retired Foreign Service Officers and Civil Service
retires who worked in the State Department, back to Washington. I had
been coming to these events for the last ten years, but this one
promised to be different. We had a new President and a new Secretary
of State and much was expected of both of them.

Bank warns of more phone scams
Officials at Ohio State Bank have announced that they have been
the target of yet another phone scam. Many calls have been received
stating that customers and non-customers have gotten automated calls
on their cell phones, requesting personal, debit card or loan
information. This scam is nationwide and many banks and their
customers have been affected.

NOTICE
The Richwood Gazette office will be closed on Monday, May 25 for
the observance of Memorial Day. Therefore, the newspaper will be
published on Thursday, May 28. Subscribers should expect to receive
their newspapers a day later than normal

Council discusses paving village streets
Paving village streets was a hot topic at the Richwood Village
Council meeting Monday night. Scott Jerew was absent from the meeting.

North Union wins LEADS Head Start Highest Award
In recognition of its excellent child care program and its ongoing
commitment to children, LEADS Head Start - North Union has received a
Three-Star Step Up To Quality Award from the Ohio Department of Job
and Family Services - Bureau of Child Care and Development, the state
agency responsible for licensing and promoting high standards among
Ohio's child care centers.

Superintendent announces NU Waiver Day
North Union School Superintendent Rick Smith has announced that there
will be no school for students on Friday, May 22. State of Ohio
officials have granted North Union Local School District, a
professional development day, to train its staff.

93rd Richwood-North Union alumni banquet set
The Richwood-North Union alumni officials are finalizing plans for
the upcoming 93rd alumni banquet, set for Saturday, June 13. The
event will be held at the newly remodeled and air conditioned North
Union High School, 401 N. Franklin St., Richwood. Social hour is held
from 5 to 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner, catered by Carlyle’s
Restaurant. Entertainment for the evening will be provided by the
North Union Show Choir.

Annual rabies vaccination clinics set
All dog and cat owners are encouraged to get their pets vaccinated
against the lethal rabies virus during this year’s community rabies
clinics. Clinics will be held Sunday, May 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. at
several locations throughout the county.

United Way adds Richwood-based pantry to its fold
North Union School District Personal Needs Pantry is now a Member Agency

NALC holds annual food drive
Richwood Post Office employees will be participating in the annual
National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) food drive to Stamp
Out Hunger this week.

American Cancer Society to host Relay For Life event
American Cancer Society of Union County will host the Relay For Life,
which begins Friday, May 8, at 7 p.m. The 18 hour event, held at the
Marysville High School stadium, will conclude Saturday at 1 p.m.

Union County hosts Household Hazardous Waste Day, Saturday
Union County Recyclers are reminding residents of the Household
Hazardous Waste Collection Day, set for Saturday, May 9. The event
will be held “rain or shine” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at their recycling
facility, 15140 E. state Route 36, near Marysville.

National Day of Prayer observed
National Day of Prayer is an annual event observed on the first
Thursday in May. The National Day of Prayer Task Force, a privately
funded organization, invites people of all faiths, to pray for the
government, military, media, business, education, church and family.
