Council discusses upcoming general fund replacement levy
Richwood  Village Council members held their first reading on 
replacing the expired general fund levy. The 1.5 mill levy generated 
$26,500 annually. Council voted unanimously to replace the 1.5 mill 
levy with a 1.2 mill levy at current property valuation. After the 
third reading, council expects to have the issue put before the 
voters at the November 2, 2010 General Election. If voters approve 
the request, the village will receive $ 28,258 annually, beginning 
January 1, 2011 for four years.

School board faces deficit spending
Faced with dipping into reserve funds this year, the North Union 
School Board is looking into ways to drive down energy costs.

Local Summer Program Promotes STEM Education
Middle-school students at North Union, recently had the chance to 
build their own solar-powered cars, create, build and program a mini-
SUMO robot, and take on a variety of engineering challenges and team-
building activities at a unique summer camp that exposes youth to 
exciting careers in science, technology, engineering and math. The 
Gateway Academy is a week-long, co-ed day camp that provides fun and 
challenging projects using curriculum developed by Project Lead the 
Way (PLTW), a non-profit organization that provides hands-on, project 
and problem-based curriculums.

Accident on Route 4 claims two lives
According to a press release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, 
Marion Post, an accident on Route 4, north of Newmans Cardington 
Road, claimed two lives late Saturday evening.

Springenfest weekend is deemed a success

Smiles were plentiful and positive comments flowed all weekend, from 
those who came to the two-day Springenfest event, held at Richwood 
fairgrounds. The children’s area was busy from start to finish. 
Organizers had a priority of making this year’s children’s area more 
enjoyable by expanding their excitement with six inflatables for 
jumping, sliding, etc. Parents enjoyed the extra space of the grounds 
where the children could play for hours.

Sheriff seeks to reinstate deputies
Request for money comes as  part of tax  budget review
The Union County Sheriff is asking the Union County Commissioners to 
bring back 10 deputies laid off earlier this year.

One vehicle crash claims a life
west of York Center Monday, claimed the life of a 20 year old woman.
According to the Union County Post of the State Highway Patrol, at 
approximately 8:30 a.m., troopers and EMS responded to a report of a 
crash on Route 47. A black 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse was west bound on 
Route 47 when the car dove off the left side of the roadway and 
struck a tree. Both the driver and passenger of the vehicle were 
ejected.

Get ready to celebrate the nation’s freedom at the annual 4th of July 
celebration in Prospect.

Couple plans “dream boat” wedding
When a young couple becomes engaged, excitement fills the air with 
choosing colors, decorations, the place and time of the wedding and 
reception. For Amanda Warrix and Ben Goldsmith, a majority of that 
excitement is already planned. They are getting married on the 
“Titanic,” Sunday, Aug. 22.

Haitian orphanage grateful for American support
Four local men, along with four Marion area men, spent 10 days in 
Haiti last December, coordinating efforts with the Christian  Service 
International (CSI) Ministries, to build a non-denominational church 
for the residents. CSI also operates an orphanage, HOPE, on the 
island. In January, 2010, a devastating earthquake rocked the 
country, destroying Port Au Prince, leaving thousands of people 
homeless.

Springenfest is a weekend of family fun and entertainment!
North Union Athletic Committee (NUAC) will see months of planning new 
events, come together, inviting the public to the 33rd Annual 
Springenfest. The two-day event will provide entertainment for all 
ages beginning Friday, June 18  and ending Saturday evening. All 
proceeds from the event will be used to provide athletic facilities 
and equipment for North Union athletes.

Newly installed video cameras at the Richwood park are already paying 
dividends.

Free weekly lunch available for K-5th grade children
North Union Cooperative is hoping to reach kindergarten through fifth 
grade students who might qualify for free and reduced lunches and 
offer free lunches on Thursdays. The event will be held in Richwood 
at Richwood Park and also in Magnetic Springs at the old fire station 
from 12 noon to 1 p.m.

Healthy senior farmers’ market coupons are back!
Union County seniors, age 60 and older with income eligibility limits 
received good news recently.  The 2010 Healthy Senior Farmers’ Market 
Program has raised the income limits for singles with a gross income 
level of less than $1,805 per month or $2,429 for a couple per month. 
These figures are before Medicare, taxes, insurance, etc. is taken 
out. Proof of income will be required.

Get ready for 33rd annual Springenfest event
The third weekend of June, will soon be upon us when the annual two-
day Springenfest event hits Richwood.  There’s a twist to this year’s 
festival,  it will be held at The Richwood Fairgrounds.

There’s a  new “book” keeper in town
Richwood-North Union Public Library will have a new director July 1. 
Sarah E. Moore, who is relocating from Colorado, will take over the 
reins of the library.

Students honor their special influences at banquet

The  second annual Academic Excellence Teacher Appreciation banquet 
was held recently at North Union High School. The event was sponsored 
by the N. U. H. S. National Honor Society. Students who earned a 3.3 
grade point average or higher were highlighted and the students was 
given a chance to honor the person that has been influential in their 
success in school. Students gave a speech they had created on why 
this person was special to them.

North Union Class of 2010 names Valedictorian and co-Salutatorians
Three students will serve as Valedictorian and co-Salutatorians by 
the North Union Local School District for the 2009-10 school year.
Aaron Smith, son of Jovonny and Merry Smith has earned the honor of 
Valedictorian and Michelle Shepherd, daughter of Jerry and Sharlene 
Shepherd and Samuel Smith, son of Raymond and Cathy Miller will serve 
as co-Salutatorians.

North Union 2010 graduation June 4
Seniors will take one last walk across the stage at North Union High 
School, Friday, June 4, to  receive their diplomas. Ceremonies begin 
at 7 p.m. in the school gynmasium.

Man charged with cruelty to animals
Union County Sheriff Rocky Nelson announced last week that Billy Joe 
Gregg, age 25, of Delaware County, was arrested and charged with 12 
counts of Cruelty to Animals, a misdemeanor of the second degree. If 
convicted, each count carries 90 days incarceration and a $750 fine. 
At press time, Gregg was unable to make $100,000 bail bond and is 
currently housed in the Tri County Jail in Mechanicsburg.

It’s Richwood-North Union alumni season!
It’s that time of the year again, to renew friendships with those you 
graduated with from high school. The annual Richwood-North Union 
Alumni Banquet is set for Saturday, June 12 at North Union High 
School, 401 N. Franklin St.
