Council allows parking lot use for farmers’ market
It appears that the village of Richwood will allow an area farmers’ 
market to set-up shop in the village parking lot at 153 N. Franklin St.

Community gathers to discuss drug testing
The North Union Board Policy Committee held an open forum to the 
public to discuss policy recommendations to drug test students  in 
grades seven through twelve for extracurricular activities.

Bikers raise funds for Chapel Hill House
Poker Runs are normally an event where motorcyclists ride from a 
designated rest stop, collecting a playing card at each stop and 
returning to the home base with their poker cards in hand. The top 
three hands usually win prizes.

North Union School board discusses track options

North Union officials are looking into the pricey undertaking of 
resurfacing the district’s track.

Richwood celebrates 135th year  of village fire department
Editor’s note: information about the history of the Richwood Fire 
Department was taken from “The History of Union County, Ohio, Vol. 
II, Part Two
A terrible fire happened in Richwood on April 9, 1875 on the east 
side of  Franklin Street, between Blagrove and Ottaway streets. It 
was discovered in a barn at the rear of Westheimer’s dry goods and 
grocery store. Before the fire was extinguished, a total of nine 
buildings were destroyed and the loss amounted to approximately 
$25,000. This unfortunate incident soon led to the organization of a 
fire department in Richwood.

American Cancer Society hosts Relay For Life
Cancer. It is a term that everyone is familiar with, some more than 
others. Family and friends will gather this weekend in support of 
finding a cure for cancer.

Thank a veteran for your freedom
Memorial Day, originally called “Decoration Day,” is a day of 
remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service.

Ongoing construction
Route 739 will be reduced to one lane of two-way traffic in various 
sections between Route 31 and Wasserbeck Rd. from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. 
for drain work and pavement repair. Completion date: July 31.

Council offers space for township trustees

With the Richwood village  administration and police departments
recently moving into the new administrative offices at 153 N. Franklin St.,
the building may be gaining another new tenant.

Richwood has a corner cafe
Stop at the corner of N. Franklin and W. Blagrove Sts. for a cup of 
joe. Cathy’s Corner Cup will soon be open to offer patrons a cup of 
coffee, cappuccino or tea and a fresh donut made fresh daily at Der 
Dutchman Restaurant.

Hometown Heroes of Union County
The Union County Chapter of the American Red Cross is honoring 
Hometown Heroes of Union County who have selflessly performed heroic 
deeds and/or outstanding service in our community. The Ambassador 
Hero Selection Committee will meet with, interview and arrange for a 
complimentary professional photo session for each nominee. The 
nomination period will officially begin on Friday, June 11, during a 
luncheon, immediately following the 12th Annual Golf Outing, 
“Swinging For Our Heroes.”

Thieves strike twice in northern Union County
Union County Sheriff’s office has received two breaking and entering 
reports recently in northern Union county.

 Highway Patrol and AMA continue motorcycle safety partnership
To kick-off Motorcycle Awareness Month, the Ohio State Highway Patrol 
and American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) are continuing their Ride 
Smart. Drive Smart. safety education partnership.

Voters generous at the polls
Voters spoke their minds at the polls Tuesday, on several state and 
local issues and candidates.

Become a supporter of “The Center”
For many years, it’s been known as Richwood’s “Civic Center.” Take 
the word civic: which means relating to activities of people in their 
town, city, or local area. The Center is a group of people who do 
activities together or for others in their town. Anyone who is 18 
years or older, can be a member of The Center. It’s not just a place 
for “old folks.”

Man charged with crimes against family member

A Richwood man could be facing nearly a decade and a half in prison 
after alleged crimes against a teenage relative. A Union County Grand 
Jury has indicted Kenneth Michael DeWees, 45, of 402 Forrest Lane.

Letter carriers collecting for food drive
The National Association of Letter Carriers, in conjunction with the 
United States Postal Service, will be collecting non-perishable food 
items for the Richwood Emergency Assistance Program (REAP Food 
Pantry) on Saturday, May 8. This annual food drive helps families in 
the North Union School District who might be struggling financially.
