Council selects Teresa McElroy as newest council member
Richwood Council voted to put a new council member in place Monday 
night. After interviewing three prospective candidates prior to the 
meeting, council held a secret ballot and selected Teresa McElroy to 
fill the post vacated by Von Beal. Beal took a new job which required 
him to move from the village.

Artist, author and publisher to exhibit at local library
Everyone has a story to tell about their childhood. Marilyn Thornton 
Schraff has written a book about her childhood memories called 
"Appalachian Childhood." Her non-fiction account of life growing up 
in southern rural Ohio in the Appalachia area, is told in a positive 
venture.

Claibourne United Methodist Church hosting Jerry Lucas Ministries
Jerry Lucas is a well-known basketball star. He played on The Ohio 
State University basketball team, was a member of the OSU National 
Championship team, member of the 1960 U.S. Olympic basketball team 
and an NBA  ball player. But he is also well-known as “Dr. Memory.”

Homecoming Snake Dance set for Wednesday, Oct. 6
North Union High School students will by holding their tradition 
Snake Dance through the streets of Richwood on Wednesday, Oct. 6. The 
event is held to celebrate the annual “Homecoming” game.

Chamber of Commerce holds forum to meet the candidate
The Union County Chamber of Commerce Legislative Committee is hosting 
an open forum for Union County residents to meet candidates running  
for governer and U.S. House of Representatives in District 15. Due to 
scheduling conflicts, the only candidate to attend the forum will be 
Steve Stivers, who is running for the U.S. House of Representatives 
in the 15th District.

Are you registered to vote Nov. 2?
The General Election is Tuesday, Nov. 2 and if you are wanting to 
cast your vote, you must be registered by Monday, Oct. 4.

VFW hosts shredding day
Do you have boxes of paperwork that you don’t need, but don’t have a 
way to disposing of them?
The Richwood VFW Post 870 is sponsoring a “shredding” day this 
Saturday, Oct. 2. The event will be held at Richwood Cardinal, 365 E. 
Blagrove St. in the parking lot from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Land Heritage Trust hosts farm tour of Richwood area

The third annual farm tour of Union County was held in the Richwood 
area last week. The Land Heritage Trust of Union County sponsored the 
tour. Their purpose is to protect and conserve farmland, countryside 
and educate the public about the importance of the county’s heritage 
and history.

Heifer Festival set for Oct. 2

The sixth annual Heifer Festival will be held at the Richwood 
Fairgrounds on Saturday, Oct. 2, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  All profits 
of the festival will be donated to Heifer International, a non-profit 
organization that has been working to help the less fortunate for 
over 65 years.  Admission and parking are free and activities for all 
ages will allow you to have fun while helping others.

NU students learn appropriate online behavior of computer use
When it comes to technology, today’s students may know more than 
their teachers.
But sometimes lost in the concept of “can” we do this with a 
computer, is the question of “should” we do this. That is where 
educators at the North Union School District are stepping in

Memories of “On River Road” revisited

During a devastating tragedy, everyone involved has their own way of 
dealing with the situation. Some deal with it, some don't, but during 
the evening of Thursday, July 30 and the morning of Friday, July 
31,1987, lives were forever changed. On this particular evening, five 
friends, who had all graduated together in 1986 from North Union High 
School, ended up hanging out. That evening, Victoria (Fowler) 
Endicott, her twin sister and a friend all suffered serious injuries, 
and two of her friends died in the accident.

Dr. Lee’s Stove Shop opens in Richwood
There's a new "doctor" in town, and his main goal is to help 
households keep warm this winter.
Dr. Lee's Stove Shop opened last week in Richwood, located at 2 N. 
Franklin St. Cindy and Ken Slaven, owners of Dr. Lee's Stove Shop for 
28 years, decided to locate their third store in Richwood. The other 
two stores are in Lynchburg, OH and   DeGraff, the home office.

American Red Cross holds successful bloodmobile drive
The Richwood First United Methodist Church hosted a bloodmobile on 
Monday, August 16, where
52 productive units collected.

Grand jury selections for September term
Area residents who were selected to serve on Grand Jury during the 
September term. Residents will receive notification if/when they are 
needed to serve.

County crews to create “a bend in the road”
Residents in the vicinity of Rt. 47 and Miller Road had seen county 
crews working in the triangular piece of land that separates the two 
high-traffic roadways. The Union County Engineer’s Office hopes this 
realignment of the road will provide better visibility for traffic.

North Union Schools receive excellent rating for third year
Every year, the state releases a report card on all public schools as 
to how they are meeting state requirements in education. Recently, 
the North Union Schools report card shows the district has reached 
the “excellent” rating three years in a row.

Customer Appreciation Day Set
The Richwood Area Business Association (RABA) wants you to mark your 
calendars for their annual Customer Appreciation Day, Saturday, Sept. 
18.


 Author writes grandmother’s story, from riches to rags
It’s a love story of two people from different backgrounds and their 
journey through tragedy and devotion. Sandy Hall used her 
grandmother’s life story to write a book as therapy, during a time of 
healing. And she came home to Richwood to share her story last 
Wednesday.

It’s time to “Give United”
United Way working to raise $875,000 in 2010 campaign
The 2010 United Way campaign launched this week as “Champions for the 
Cause,” gathered to kick off their fundraising efforts in 51 area 
workplaces. Over the next three months, United Way volunteers will be 
working to raise $875,000 to meet the growing demand for social 
services in Union County. Giving to United Way of Union County has 
increased each of the last four years, with more than $843,000 
donated last year.

Country singer Josh Thompson to perform at fair
Richwood fair board members invite the public to spend an evening 
with Josh Thompson, an up-and-coming country music star, at a free 
concert Saturday, Set. 4 at The Richwood Independent Fair.

It’s off to the races at the Richwood Fair!
Harness racing has been a staple at the fair for many years, and this 
year it  continues with three days  of racing, Saturday, Sunday and 
Monday.
