Village audit shows two areas to be corrected

A state audit of the village of Richwood has discovered a number of violations. Ohio Auditor of State Dave Yost released the Richwood audit, which covers 2008 and 2009, last week. The audit includes a $2,710 finding for recovery, as well as several major violations and a referral to the Ohio Ethics Commission.

North Union graduate named Lt. Colonel
Former Richwood resident, Valerie Thompson Belle, a 1984 graduate of North Union High School, was recently promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force. She is the daughter of former residents, Mike and Karen Thompson, now of Laurelville, OH.

Local church to host GAP Teen Program
Teens usually recognized the initials GAP as the name of a popular clothing store. But members of the Richwood First United Methodist Church want teens to associate GAP as “God Always Present.”

American Red Cross needs you now
It has been a long, hard winter and no one knows that more than the American Red Cross. Because of the harsh winter, many bloodmobiles had been canceled and the Red Cross was unable to collect blood donations in certain parts of the country, including much of Ohio. Over 750 blood drives were unable to collect nearly 28,000 scheduled blood donations since January. As a result, blood donations are the lowest seen in a decade.

Agriculture is the root of National FFA Week
The Smith-Hughes National Vocational Education Act established vocational agriculture courses in 1917. Henry Groseclose was an agriculture teacher, trainer and former agricultural education instructor, who helped organize the Future Farmers of Virginia (FFV) for boys in ag classes. So, similar groups were established across the United States. The FFV would be used as a model for creation of the FFA in 1928.

UCBDD Board welcomes two new members, elects officers
The Union County Board of Developmental Disabilities (UCBDD) welcomed new members Mike Goddard and Kelly Morris at its monthly meeting Monday, Jan. 24. Appointed by the Union County Commissioners, Goddard and Morris fill the vacancies left by Steve Streng and Bruce Davis.

Bloodmobile drive successful
The Richwood First United Methodist Church hosted a bloodmobile on Monday, Jan. 17 collecting 50 much needed units.

Ice and snow leave residents searching for salt
Last week’s two to three inches of ice caused havoc for area residents. Then add two to three inches of snow on top of the ice. Snowplows were distributing chemicals non-stop for two days, hoping to melt the ice. Residents were chipping away at ice on windshields, steps and sidewalks. To make that job easier, local businesses were scrambling for melting salt, as their supply diminished within days.

Three new members added to North Union Hall of Pride
The North Union High School Hall of Pride selection committee has announced the newest members to be inducted into an elite group of graduates. The committee recognizes former graduates from the school district who have given back to their community in athletics, business, education, humanitarian pursuits or service to school or community. They are chosen on their accomplishments, honors and recognition since their high school graduation.

Local officials dealing with drug problems
Every community in the United States worries about drug use and abuse in their schools and towns. It’s an epidemic in some areas. No city, town or village is exempt from the problem. But what are schools and law enforcement doing about the problem?
