Two retire from military, home to celebrate Memorial Day

Memorial Day is not only an official holiday with no work or school, it’s also a time to celebrate the service that members of our armed forces have given over the years.
For Richwood residents Larry Nibert and Dan Michaels, that celebration is well deserved.

Public invited to Memorial Day Parade
All community veterans, whether they served in war or peacetime, are invited to participate in the Memorial Day parade, held in downtown Richwood on Monday, May 30.

United Way shows care for community
The rainy weather did not dampen the spirit of the annual “Community Care Day” in Union County.
United Way volunteers spent last Tuesday traveling throughout the county, doing all types of projects for residents, organizations and businesses. Painting, landscaping, holding food drives, cleaning senior’s homes, visiting residents in nursing homes, are just a few of the jobs completed.

Residents input needed for budget cuts
The Union County Commissioners held a town hall meeting last week to ask the county residents what services are important to them. No one knows exactly the amount of funding will be cut by the State of Ohio, but the county is preparing for a $20 million dollar loss.

Council prepared to begin spraying as rainfall brings mosquitos
Continuous heavy rain brings standing water, and standing water means more attractive areas for mosquitos, Richwood Village Council noted during Monday night’s meeting.

Office closed in honor of Memorial Day
The Richwood Gazette office will be closed Monday, May 30 in honor of the Memorial Day holiday. Regular hours will resume Tuesday, May 31. The newspaper will be published a day late, and will be available on Thursday, June 2.

Students participate in online biology class

North Union High School biology students addressed the school board Monday evening.
LeAnne Dixon, Brittney Ratliff, Katie Beeney and Xavier Davenport have been participating in a trial version of an online biology class for the company 360 Ed.

Get their rabies shots
The annual Union County rabies vaccination clinic is set for Sunday, May 22. Dog and cat owners can get their pets vaccinated against rabies for only $7 a pet, locally at the Northern Union County Fire Department at 602 N. Franklin St. from 1 to 4 p.m. Only cats and dogs that are four months of age and older will be vaccinated. Dogs must be on a leash and under control of an adult. Dog licenses will also be available for purchase at the clinic.

Take time for Memorial Day services
Every year, the last Monday in May is observed at Memorial Day. Formerly known as Decoration Day, the holiday is to commemorate United State soldiers who have died while serving in the military.

Elgin Schools host groundbreaking
Elgin Local Schools invite the community to attend their groundbreaking ceremonies Thursday, May 26 at 1:30 p.m. The event will mark the construction of the new K-12 campus, which will be held at the east entrance of the existing high school. Parking will be available in the student parking lot with shuttle service provided to the ceremony.

NU FFA members receive top honors
The Ohio State FFA Degree was awarded to four members of the North Union FFA Chapter; Cole Barry (senior), Travis Smith (senior), Cody Johnston (graduate) and Blake Taylor (senior).

The Impact of Lost Revenue on Union County
Concern over the loss of an estimated $20 million has spurred several Union County agency heads to reach out to residents through town hall meetings scheduled for May 11, 17 and 18.

Carey inducted into Ohio Agricultural Hall of Fame
A local family is celebrating the induction of their father into the Ohio Agricultural Hall of Fame.
However, the inductee, Edwin J. Carey, is not here to celebrate with them. Edwin passed away in 1988 after a lifetime of service to the agricultural community.

School districts working through financial woes
Many school districts in Ohio have been waiting for the state budget to be announced regarding school financing. It’s evident that with a new governor, that cuts will be made, but to what extent, no one really knows.

Police Chief looks to reduce departments fuel costs
The Richwood Police Department is focusing on new ways to cut down on the cost of fuel. To reduce the amount of fuel the department is using, each officer will be required to work one hour per shift on foot.

North Union celebrates “The Fine Arts”
North Union Schools will host the annual Fine Arts Festival this Saturday at all three schools. Whether its music, painting or woodworking, students enjoy showcasing their art talents. All events are free, so spend the day recognizing the talents of the district’s students.

North Union students compete in National Robotics Challenge
Nearly 1,000 students from 65 schools and 10 states recently competed in the National Robotics Challenge, a three-day event which features 13 categories. North Union Middle School students competed and came home with some special hardware. The competition is hosted at the Marion County Fairgrounds Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Marion and continues to grow each year, propelled by interest from elementary to college students and supported by sponsors, such as Honda.

United Way gears up for annual Community Care Day, May 17
The 15th Annual Community Care Day is just around the corner.
The signature volunteer event for the United Way of Union County will be held on Tuesday, May 17.

Honda hosts motorcycle women’s awareness event
May is Motorcycle Awareness Month and Women Riders Month. Honda Marysville MotorSports is teaming up with the Columbus Chrome Divas on Saturday, May 7, to bring a lively day of fun and learning to women across central Ohio. Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Day is open to the public and will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the MotorSports store, located at 630 Colemans Crossing Boulevard, Marysville.

Union County considers effect of state budget on local government
The Union County Commissioners are hosting a press conference on behalf of the Union County entities most affected by the loss of TPP (Tangible Personal Property) tax replacement revenue. Representatives from multiple agencies will be available for a question and answer period.
