Voters need to prepare for November 8 election
Registered voters will be converging on the polls Tuesday, Nov. 8 to voice their opinions on elected officials and issues. The polls will be open 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Council grants easment and discusses holiday lights
Council members granted an encroachment easement at Monday night's meeting. The property, located at 147 N. Franklin Street, was under contract with prospective buyers, when the real estate agent found that a building on the property was located approximately two feet on village property. Real estate agent Shelley Beeney, asked council to approve the easement, rather than have the building relocated.

Board hears update on Race to the Top
North Union School Board members heard an update about the school district’s plans for the Race to the Top at their monthly meeting Monday. Curriculum Coordinator Matt Burggraf presented information as to where the school district is and what new ideas will be implemented in the next few years.

Nationwide Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Set
The Union County Sheriff’s Office, along with other government, community, public health and law enforcement agencies across Ohio, will be partnering with the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration for the nationwide prescription drug “Take-Back.”

Humane Society offers personalized “Dog House” bricks
The Union County Humane Society is kicking off their largest fundraising project with a “dog house and bone” brick/paver/granite design to be located in the front of the animal shelter at 16540 County Home Road, near Marysville.

Three local residents indicted
Three Richwood residents have been indicted by a Union County Grand Jury.
Melanie Rose Sumner, 18, and Daniel Lee Dewitt, 20, both of 6 1/2 North Franklin Street, are charged with two counts of corrupting another with drugs. Also indicted was Michelle Thompson, 42, of 14600 Bethlehem Claibourne Road.

9-1-1-Public Safety Communications Levy explained
The Union County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Union County Emergency Services Agencies (Fire, EMS, Law Enforcement, EMA) will host a town hall meeting to explain the 9-1-1- Public Safety Communications Levy that will appear on the Tuesday, Nov. 8 election ballot.

Claibourne-Saturday, Oct. 29 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Prospect-Saturday, Oct. 29 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. with parade following at 7 p.m.
Richwood-Monday, Oct. 31 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Village crews preparing for winter season

The Village of Richwood is busy preparing for the approaching winter weather.
Village Administrator, Lin Hensley told Richwood Council members that Monday, Oct. 24 will be the last day of chipping in order to get trucks set up for the winter season.

German to receive Fire Officer of the Year award
The Ohio Department of Public Safety, a division of the Emergency Medical Service, honors individuals who go over and beyond in the field of fire prevention and education in Ohio. Todd German, retired fire chief of the Northern Union County Fire District, will receive the Fire Officer of the Year award at ceremonies Friday, Oct. 14, 9 a.m. at the Columbus Division of Fire Training Academy at 3639 Parsons Ave. in Columbus.

Humane Society invites public to open house
The Union County Humane Society (UCHS) is hosting an Open House on Saturday, Oct. 22. The event will be held at their facility, 16540 County Home Road, north of Marysville from 1 to 5 p.m.. The community is welcome to tour the facility, view adoptable animals and see the plans for the expansion campaign that will double the size of the facility, as well as take advantage of this one-time opportunity for discounted vaccinations.

Toys for Tots drive begins
Members of The First Baptist Church, Creations Beauty Salon and the Northern Union County Fire Department are combining efforts to again host the Richwood area Toys for Tots drive.

Care Train of Union County celebrates 25 years
The Care Train, one of Union County’s public treasures, assists families, seniors and disabled adults by providing food and toys to those experiencing economic difficulties during the holiday season.

North Union recognizes achievements in the district
To honor those that exemplify the North Union Local School District’s mission of student excellence and success in the 21st Century, the District Quality Leadership Team, comprised of parents, staff, business people, and community members, have chosen the recipients of the “Celebrating Our Vision” Student Awards. The nominees have distinguished themselves in the areas of Academics, Athletics, Civic Leadership and Social Responsibility, Co-Curricular and Extra-Curricular Activities, and Creative and Performing Arts. The honorees were recognized Friday evening, prior to the high school football game.

Elgin School District receives Auditor of State Award
Kim Reynolds, Treasurer of the Elgin Local School District, has received the Ohio Auditor Of State Award from Dave Yost, Auditor of State. This award is presented for exemplary financial reporting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for the year 2010.

United Way hosts online auction
United Way of Union County has announced their goal of raising $900,000 for this year’s campaign. They support various organizations in providing funds to senior centers. American Red Cross, Big Brothers Big Sisters, youth organizations, teen centers, food pantries, areas to help residents within Union County.
