School district implements interactive learning

Teachers in the North Union School District are coming together to encourage student participation in the classroom through interactive learning.

The Union County Health Department announced community flu clinics will begin in early October.

Action for Children welcomes Union County enrollees
Home child caregivers, individuals who care for young children in their home, are eligible to receive funds for the meals and snacks they serve children in their care. They simply have to call Action for Children’s toll-free number, 1-877-AFC-FOOD (877-232-3663), and ask about joining the Food Club, the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) under the sponsorship of Action for Children. In addition to meal reimbursement per child, Action for Children’s services include working with providers to set up menus, offering free nutrition workshops and providing quarterly staff visits to give educational assistance and resources. With the addition of a nutrition specialist on staff, the agency also provides dietary health information to providers via phone or home visits.

Landon Road will get new facelift

Richwood Village Administrator Lin Hensley told council members Monday night, that the Landon Road project is expected to be completed soon.
“We have been working with Stantec on the project and have finally passed the environmental inspection,” said Hensley. “We are hoping to close on the project by late October or early November at the latest.”

NU School Board learns of growth in school technology

North Union School Board members received a technology update at their meeting Monday night.
Director of Technology Pam Wenning-Earp presented a slide show to the board that highlighted the district’s use of technology from 1998 to 2011.

New outdoor warning device is installed
For many years, an outdoor warning siren sat on top of the town hall roof and warned the Richwood village and outlying areas when a tornado was spotted. Last year, lightening struck the siren, damaging it severely and with the age of the equipment, parts were not available, leaving the local fire department to make some decisions on replacing the apparatus.

County’s budget woes may lead to more layoffs, “deep” department cuts

It’s been a difficult two years for Union County finances, and it doesn’t look like it’s getting any better.
Union County commissioners announced last week that potential layoffs and “deep cuts” may be unavoidable over the next two years, now that they have a better idea from Union County Auditor Andrea Weaver about state budget projections.

Union County’s Wellness Program receives $7,000 health grant
CEBCO, the county’s employee insurance benefits group, has awarded Union County’s Wellness program a grant to assist in the development and implementation of programs and activities that targets the improvement of the health and wellness of its employees.

Mark your calendar for free child safety fair
Parents and grandparents are always concerned about keeping their children in a safe environment. Make it a point to attend The Keeping Kids Safe Project by S.I.P. Kids, a national child safety organization who tours the country providing free FBI quality digital fingerprints for children. The organization is coming to Marysville to host a free child safety fair. “Police officials say time is crucial in the recovery of missing children. One major problem that costs precious time is gathering current photographs, fingerprints, and personal information to assist law enforcement agencies,” says National Director of S.I.P. Kids, Lytishya Borglum.

Voters go to polls November 8
Election day is less than two months away and area residents will have plenty of open positions and issues to vote for.
From 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Nov. 8, voters will take to the polls to vote for several candidates and issues in the upcoming general election.

Council accepts ordinance regarding dog waste
After several weeks of discussion on a possible dog leash and waste clean-up ordinance, a final resolution has been drafted for Richwood Village Council members to vote on.

Arson investigation results in second arrest
Union County Sheriff Jamie Patton’s office has released a statement regarding a joint ongoing investigation with detectives from Hardin and Union County and investigators from the State Fire marshal’s office, into recent suspicious fires which have occurred in northern Union County and Southeastern Hardin County recently.

Customer Appreciation Day set for loyal patrons
Sometimes the phrase “shop at home,” has rewards. The Richwood Area Business Association (RABA) is rewarding the community by sponsoring Customer Appreciation Day on Saturday, Sept. 17.

Heifer Festival comes to Richwood September 24
Richwood is home to a fall event called The Heifer Festival, which first began in 2005. Few center Ohioans were aware of the world renowned non-profit organization, Heifer International. The public is invited to attend the event at The Richwood Fairgrounds on Saturday, September 24 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Accidental shooting investigated

Details remain vague after a Marysville man was shot by his father in a hunting accident last week.
According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, Richard D. Neill, Jr., 54, of 9280 Herriott Road, was shot by his father, Richard D. Neill, 82, whose address was not provided.
