Blue jackets symbolize success

It all began for the North Union FFA in 1937, when Richwood High School vocational agriculture classes started a local FFA chapter. North Union FFA is celebrating 75 years of proven student success while it looks forward to a future of great opportunities in agriculture, education and leadership. The North Union FFA has had four past state FFA officers, 56 top five state career development event teams (several state winning teams), 15 national career development teams,  state and national proficiency winners, 47 American degree winners and is a top ten chapter in the state.

Citizen’s graduates from academy

On the evening of Nov. 26, 2012, twelve committed citizens of Union County graduated from the very first Union County Sheriff’s first Citizen Academy. Class # 001 completed a twelve-week program that met every Monday night at the Sheriff’s Office, beginning September 10. The goal of the academy is to educate members of the community about the operations and statutory requirements for the Office of Sheriff. Through the Academy program, members of the Sheriff’s Office staff worked to educate and build strong relationships with those they serve and protect. The Academy offers the opportunity for participants to gain a better understanding of the day-to-day responsibilities of the Sheriff’s Office. The academy not only educates, but also forges a stronger partnership with the community and ultimately establishes a safer environment for all Union County residents.

Students host 9th annual free community dinner

Students in the Career Based Intervention class at North Union High School will be hosting their ninth annual free community dinner. The event will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 18, in the high school cafeteria from 5 to 7 p.m.

Holiday events continue in Richwood

The Richwood Area Business Association reminds residents that they will host their annual Hospitality Night this Thursday.

RAMA to offer turkey or ham

The Richwood Area Ministerial Association (RAMA) is once again offering turkeys or hams for families in the North Union School District  in need of assistance.

Gazette to publish Christmas church events
Local churches are invited to submit special events happening  during the Christmas Season. A schedule of events will be published on Wednesday, Dec. 19 with dates and times.
 

RABA welcomes new business member
Open Hands Massage officially cut their ribbon, stating they are open for business in Richwood last Thursday. The new massage facility is located at 23 North Franklin Street and is open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays by appointment.

Football game benefits local pantries

Village employee Shawn Evans and police officer Jamie Stoops wanted to make a difference in the community this Christmas, so they organized a flag football game, hoping to make it an annual event.

Council continues discussing water rates

Water and sewer rates for the Village of Richwood will remain the same, for now. This week, Aqua Inc., the for-profit company looking to partner with the village to upgrade the water and sewer systems, provided Village Fiscal Officer Tim Goodwin with its plan to help upgrade the systems.

Richwood’s Hospitality Night last Thursday was enjoyed by many, checking out specials in local businesses, just in time for Christmas shopping. It was also the last opportunity to sign-up to win a free pie, sponsored by the Richwood Area Business Association (RABA).

Project Linus helps victims of Sandy
The Union County Chapter of Project Linus continues to donate blankets in times of need. There were 4,006 blankets donated to Project Linus Union County this year. A total so far of 3,946 blankets have been distributed to children in need.

School board prepares for possible changes

People across the United States are mourning last week’s tragedy in Newtown, Conn. The loss of lives on Friday, Dec. 14, from ages five to nearly 60 at the Sandy Hook Elementary has affected each and every one of us.

Churches offer Christmas services
Area churches are offering special Christmas services to the public to share in the reason for the season. The public is invited to partake in any of the free services listed below.

Fair board welcomes new members

The Richwood Independent Agricultural Society met last week, welcoming three new members to the board. Those new members who received the most bids by members of the Ag Society, are Luke Brill, Jennifer Jones and Kyle Wiley.

Richwood shines in judges eyes

Volunteer judges traveled street  to street in Richwood last week and even ventured out into the countryside looking for the best Christmas light decorations. As they made their way house by house, deciding which displays fit various categories, they tallied their votes and announced the winning entries. Some of the winning displays are located on page 8 of today’s edition and the remaining pictures will be published in the Dec. 26 Richwood Gazette.

Office Closed Christmas
Because Christmas falls on Tuesday, Dec. 25, The Richwood Gazette will close on Monday, Dec. 24 at 2 p.m. The Gazette will publish a day late, so subscribers and newsstands will get the newspaper on Thursday. As traffic incident management (TIM) becomes more important to maintaining safe and efficient traffic flow on the highways, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and Ohio Department of Transportation have partnered with the Federal Highway Administration to bring the first-ever TIM training to Ohio’s first responders and public safety partners.

School district practices safety measures

North Union School Superintendent Rick Smith recently sent a message to all parents in the North Union School District. The letter was to assure parents of the safety of their children, following the tragedy of the Sandy Hook School in Newtown, Conn.
