Resident questions work done by village

A Richwood resident approached council Monday night about work completed on his property by village employees.
The work included a sewer and water line on his property, located behind Parrott Implement, and a new manhole on his neighbor’s property that were allegedly installed improperly.

Grand Prix Series will link local races

The Union County Wellness Consortium has found a way to promote friendly competition in a philanthropic environment.
During 2011, the Wellness Consortium partnered with race directors from several organizations within the county to create the Grand Prix Series, a group of 14 different races from 5Ks to triathlons that are hosted by different organizations in Union County.

Brown Jug racing director Tom Thomson dies at 73
Walter D. “Tom” Thomson II, former publisher of the Delaware Gazette and the man most credited with modernizing the Little Brown Jug harness race, died Friday. He was 73.

The Union County Drug-Free Youth Coalition and Union County Youth 2 Youth groups are hosting a free event for teens in Union County.

Superintendent explains details of single bus routing

On Thursday, Jan. 5, North Union School District held their second community meeting on single bus routing. The goal of Superintendent Rick Smith is to present a plan to the Board of Education at the February 13 board meeting, held at the high school. At that time, the board will vote to pursue additional planning that would implement single bus routes for the 2012-13 school year.

United Way hopes to hit fundraising goal

Despite a poor economy, the local United Way chapter is projecting it will surpass its $900,000 campaign goal for 2012.

Two drives set to honor North Union student
The American Red Cross is an organization that comes to the aid of people in a disaster, such as a fire, hurricane, tornado, etc. Red Cross also assists in blood drives, which are in constant need.
Brandon Frey, a North Union High School student was injured two weeks ago while participating in a wrestling tournament. His knee was dislocated and a blood clot caused much distress, at one point, it was possible Brandon might lose his leg. After several surgeries and many units of blood, Brandon is hopefully on the mend. During his ordeal, he had received many units of blood.

Calls for service down, arrests are up in 2011
According to information released by Richwood Police Sgt. Becky Frazier, the Richwood Police Department reported a total of 1,276 calls for service were recorded in 2011, down from 1,290 in 2010.

Weather tops news in 2011
Many events, good and bad, affected Union County during 2011. The most notable topic was the amount of rain received. Farmers struggled with planting and harvesting, due to the unusually amount of rain.

Health clinic means more services
The Union County Health Department is leading a regional effort to bring reproductive health services to Champaign, Madison and Union Counties.

Ohio Minimum Wage increased
On Jan. 1, workers covered under Ohio’s minimum wage law will see a 30-cent increase in their hourly wage, taking them to $7.70 an hour. In 2006, on behalf of Ohio’s lowest wage earners, the Ohio AFL-CIO and the coalition, “Ohioans for a Fair Minimum Wage” successfully placed the Constitutional Amendment on the ballot, which tied Ohio’s minimum wage rate to the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The CPI has increased over four percent from Sept. 1, 2010 to Sept. 31, 2011.

Postal rates on the rise
The United States Postal Service announced on Oct. 18, that new prices and product features will take affect Jan. 22, 2012.
