Valedictorian and Salutatorian are named for the NU Class of 2012

Two North Union senior students have been named to serve as their class valedictorian and salutatorian for the graduating class of 2012.
Daniel Perkins  will represent the Class of 2012 as Valedictorian. He is the son of  Gary and Laura Perkins. Ben Hamilton, son of Ryan and Julie Hamilton, will serve as Salutatorian.

Graduation ceremony set for North Union Senior Class

Friday evening will be the last time North Union graduating seniors will gather as students. Graduation ceremonies will be held at North Union High School, beginning at 7 p.m. Family and friends are invited to watch the students cross the stage one last time in the gymnasium.

Richwood-North Union Alumni banquet set

Officers of the Richwood-North Union Alumni are finalizing plans for the 96th alumni banquet to be held Saturday, June 9. The event will be held at the North Union Middle School, located at 12555 Mulvane Road, north of the high school. The social hour will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner.

Free community meals begins

School will be out this week, so that must mean that the free community meals at Richwood Park will begin serving Thursday, June 7.

Veterans are remembered on Memorial Day

When Gail DeGood-Guy (retired United Air Force) and her husband, Tom Guy (Vietnam War Veteran), moved to York Township 13 years ago, Gail regularly drove by the Somersville Cemetery on Route 31. During Memorial Days, she’d see the flags placed at the veteran’s graves.

Take time for the holiday

Monday, May 28, the last Monday in May, is a federal holiday, Memorial Day. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War, to acknowledge the fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War.

NU School board learns about Ohio’s new district report cards

New report cards for Ohio school districts could go into effect as early as August and North Union School District is preparing for those changes.

Richwood Police Department reminds you “Click it-or Ticket”
The Richwood Police Department will be out Wednesday at two check points in the village to remind drivers to have their seat belts clicked Wednesday, May 23 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Office closed in honor of Memorial Day
The Richwood Gazette office will be closed Monday, May 28 in honor of the Memorial Day holiday. Regular hours will resume Tuesday, May 29. The newspaper will be published a day late and will be available on Thursday, May 31.

Mock tornado drill deemed a success

A recent distaster drill has been deemed a success by local officials.
The natural disaster situation was a tornado hitting North Union Middle School during a school day.

Council continues to work on water and sewer needs

AquaOhio Inc. representatives have recently visited the Richwood water and sewer facilities.
On May 8 and 9, the company came to the village to review the water and sewer assets and collect financial records in order to find a way to help the village improve these systems.

NU School board refinances mortgage to save money

On April 25, the North Union School District resold the building bonds, also referred to as refinancing its mortgage, from 2002.

Union County veterinarians, Union County Humane Society and the Union County Health Department are sponsoring a rabies clinic throughout Union County this Sunday, May 20.

Police department adds cameras to fight crime

The Richwood Police Department has added car cameras to their arsenal of technology.
Police Chief Monte Asher states that the department spent $27,000 earmarked funds to purchase three Watch Guard high definition digital cameras which were installed. Justin Vanman, a technician for Watch Guard, flew in from Texas last week to train the officers in the use of the new equipment. The packaged deal included the cameras, training, software, computer server and wireless downloads.

Area man to be inducted into Ohio Military HOF

West Mansfield rural mail carrier Donald Mathys was inducted into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame for Valor on Friday, May 4, at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus.
In May of 1969, Mathys, a private first class serving as a medical aidman in Vietnam, advanced through enemy fire across open terrain to rescue a machine gunner who was wounded and unable to move from his exposed position. This occurred while on a reconnaissance mission in Kien Hoa Province when his platoon became engaged with a numerically superior force.

The Center celebrates their 50th anniversary

The Center is celebrating a milestone in May and residents are invited to share in that celebration.
On Friday, May 18, The Center will host a dinner and cabaret with Johnny Steiner and friends for the 50th anniversary.

The Big Top is coming to town!

The Richwood Area Business Association (RABA) is sponsoring the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus on Thursday, May 17.
The event will be held at the Richwood Fairgrounds with two shows, at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., rain or shine. Visitors should use the Race Street entrance to the fairgrounds.

Postal employees help fight hunger

The Richwood Post Office is joining post offices across the United States in a fight to end hunger.
The 20th anniversary of the “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive will take place the week of May 7-12 in Richwood. The public is invited to help by donating canned, non-perishable food items by dropping them off at the local postal facility, located at 12 East Ottawa Street in Richwood.

School staff and EMA to hold natural disaster simulation

North Union schools and the Union County Emergency Management Agency will be holding a joint exercise to prepare students in case of an emergency situation.

Students prepare for global finals

Local elementary students have earned a spot in the Destination Imagination’s Global Finals competition in Knoxville, Tenn.
The North Union Operation Military Blanket Destination Company won honors for creativity and problem solving at the state and regional tournaments to guarantee their spot in the global tournament May 23-26 at the University of Tennessee.

Paint the town purple for Relay for Life

Richwood residents and business owners are encouraged to join Marysville and “Paint the Town Purple.”
5-12, Union County residents are being asked to support the 2012 Relay For Life (RLF) by decorating their yards, homes and businesses with purple ribbons and RLF signs or by wearing purple in support of the event.

You’re invited to National Day of Prayer
The first Thursday of May has been designated “National Day of Prayer” across the United States.
It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. This year, marks the 61st annual event.
