Prospect dam removed for Water Beyond 2000

Prospect residents watched a piece of their history get removed last week. Demolition of the Prospect Dam is part of the Water Beyond 2000 project that will benefit the city of Columbus with additional water supply. Upground reservoirs in Union and Delaware County are being built, which will hold about nine billion gallons of water.

The North Union Wildcats wrapped up a perfect (10-0) regular season with a 29-0 victory over Highland on Friday. Details of the game can be found on page 6. As a result, NU finished fourth in Region 14 of Division IV and has earned a home game for the first round of the playoffs.

United Way of Union County has begun their campaign fundraising for the 2012 year. Their goal is to raise $950,000 to help fund the many programs in Union  County, that depend on financial support. One of their most popular ways to raise funds is through their online auction, which began last Monday.

Snake Dancing in the streets

The air is filled with excitement this week in preparation for the annual homecoming events.
Fun begins tonight at 6 p.m. Anyone who wishes to participate in the annual Snake Dance should meet at Richwood Park to line-up. There will be music and laughter through downtown Richwood to North Union High School with floats, the North Union Marching Band and football team, as they prepare for the Friday night football contest against the Buckeye Valley Barons.

The Christmas holiday will soon be upon us. Usually, it’s a time of excitement for children, and an uneasy time for the parents, especially for those who are struggling with finances and are unable to provide gifts for their children.

The flu season is here and it is very important   to check with your physician about getting a flu shot.
A flu clinic, hosted by the Union County Health Department, will be held at the Northern Union County Fire Department, 602 North Franklin Street, in Richwood. The event will be Monday, Oct. 22, from 9 a.m. to noon. No appointment is necessary.

Health officials recall epidural injections

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH), Ohio local health districts, including the Association of Ohio Health Commissioners (AOHC) and the Ohio Public Health Association (OPHA), are mobilizing community resources, to ensure all patients of four healthcare facilities are doing okay after receiving epidural injections with a potentially contaminated steroid that may cause meningitis.

The United Way of Union County, in collaboration with Holbrook & Manter CPAs, Liberty National Bank, and Nuckles Sehnert and Associates, is hosting an informational seminar in regard to risk assessment for non-profit organizations. The seminar will occur on Thursday, Oct. 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Union County Services Building, 940 London Avenue, in Marysville.  All non-profit organizations operating in Union County are invited. Registration begins at 11 a.m.

Free child safety fair offered

The Keeping Kids Safe Project by S.I.P. Kids, a national child safety organization who tours the country providing free FBI quality digital fingerprints for children, will be hosting a free child safety fair. “Police officials say time is crucial in the recovery of missing children. One major problem that costs precious time is gathering current photographs, fingerprints, and personal information to assist law enforcement agencies,” said National Director of S.I.P. Kids, Lytishya Borglum.

Congress passed the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month commemorative legislation in 1989, and for 20 years, the tradition continues. The purpose of observing this is to remember those who have died as a result of the abuse, celebrate those who have survived, raising public consciousness about violence in the home and inspiring individuals to help eliminate it.

Board hosts open house for Patterson
The Richwood Civic Center Board of Trustees invites the public to an open house to recognize Suzanne Patterson upon her retirement. The event will be at The New Center, 235 Grove Street in Richwood on Sunday, Oct. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided and former Richwood resident Mark Evans will be entertaining  the guests playing the piano.

Adopt a family this holiday season
In less than three months, many people will be celebrating the Christmas holiday. It can be a happy time and also can be a stressful time for those less fortunate, especially for those who have fled from abusive situations.
