Council told police need help solving burglaries
Village winding down summer projects

The end of summer, means many projects around the Village of Richwood have been completed or nearly finished.
Also at Monday’s meeting, Richwood Chief of Police Monte Asher spoke to council about a rash of break-ins in the area.
“We’re encouraging everyone to please call if you see anything suspicious at all,” said Asher. “We can’t catch these people without the help of the community.”

Perkins earns Eagle Scout Award

Daniel Perkins began his journey to become an Eagle Scout in 2001, when he joined Cub Scout Pack 109 as a Wolf Scout. He completed the Cub Scout program in 2005 as a second year Weblos Scout.

County Health Dept. schedule community flu clinics
The Union County Health Department announced community flu clinics will begin in early October. Vaccination is critical for some groups who are at high risk for flu-related complications. These groups include pregnant women, children younger than five (especially children under age two), adults age 50 and older, caregivers and household contacts of children under age six months, caregivers and household contacts of people with weakened immune systems, people with certain chronic medical conditions (such as COPD, asthma, diabetes), those living in long-term care facilities, and healthcare workers.

How much do you really know about Richwood’s history? Local resident Chuck Barry will host monthly meetings at the Richwood-North Union Public the first Monday of every month, if there is community interest.

Elgin invites community to signing
The new Elgin K-12 campus-style school construction is continuing smoothly. Elgin School Superintendent Bruce Gast and the Board of Education are inviting the community to two important events of this historical project-the signing of the final beams and attending the topping off ceremony.

Rowe is newest auxiliary officer
Richwood resident Jason Rowe is the latest appointed auxiliary officer for the Richwood Police Department.

Community support needed for breast cancer fundraising

The public is encouraged to participate in upcoming fundraising efforts for breast cancer. North Union Local Schools are challenging Elgin Local Schools in efforts to raise awareness and raising funds to fight breast cancer.

School Superintendent in talks with MHUC for possible athletic trainer

 A new partnership for North Union School District could lead to more hands-on opportunities for students.  The district is in early discussions with Memorial Hospital of Union County to provide an on-site athletic trainer at the high school. The partnership will also allow MHUC employees to teach a few courses at the high school in the future.

Hospital and Sheriff’s Office partner for “Take Back” Day

The Union County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with Memorial Hospital of Union County to hold a prescription drug “Take-Back,” a national initiative of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The hope is to prevent increased pill abuse and theft.

Retired teacher enjoys outdoor classroom

Once a teacher, always a teacher, they say. But teachers also learn  about a variety of things in life, as did Nancy Wiley.
The retired teacher spent 27 years in the North Union School District, 14 years teaching Home Economics to high school and middle school students. In 1995, she developed the Preschool Plus program and spent 13 years teaching pre-school students. Now she has another type of classroom-rearing Monarch butterflies.

Lightning strikes damage lift station

Recent storms in the area have caused a bit of a problem for the Village of Richwood. Lightning struck the Gill Street lift station and caused enough damage that village employees have been running it by hand.

Boosters to raise money for breast cancer

Chris Spielman has created a series of annual high school football games known statewide as the “Spielman Gridiron Classic,” which takes place during the 2012 high school football season. The North Union Athletic Boosters want to create community awareness about the great work being done in local area communities by the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center - Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Multiple drug arrests made in county

The Union County Multi Agency Drug Enforcement (M.A.D.E.) made several arrests in Union County last Friday. A five month-long investigation led to the county round-up, arresting significant players in the Union County drug scene. The task force arrested individuals in Plain City, Marysville, Richwood and rural Union County.

Area farmer grows organic sunflowers

Corn, soybeans and wheat are normally the main crops grown in central Ohio by many farmers. As you travel along country roads, especially at the intersection of  Winnemac Pike and Fish Daum Road, heads will turn and look twice, when they see a field of sunflowers blowing in the breeze.

These are familiar themes United Way and its volunteers will be echoing throughout Union County this fall, as the local non-profit works to raise $950,000 during its 2012 campaign.
