North Union High School seniors who are planning to attend college, have many opportunities to seek additional funding for their education.

Township trustees plan for new building

York Township is moving forward with its plans for a new township building. Melissa Chase, from the Union County Prosecutor’s office, was at the Jan. 7 meeting to explain the bid process to the board. There are many facets to bidding and each must be followed. We hope to be able to open bids in 2013.

School district participates in online makeup days

The North Union School District will be participating in the Ohio Department of Education’s online calamity day program. In years past, when a district went over the limit of state-allowed number of calamity days (due to weather conditions, maintenance issues, such as no water at school, etc.) days were made up at the end of the school calendar year.

February is American Heart Month and communities across the nation are putting hearts front and center. Locally, people will have lots of help giving their hearts the love and attention they need.

Blood drives receive gold rating

The Richwood community gets credit for being faithful blood donors. And for their continued support over the years. The American Red Cross Central Ohio Blood Services region has recognized the Richwood drive as a gold sponsor for hosting five blood drives in 2012. The local chapter is one of 471 organizations who also hosted four or five blood drives.

New members inducted into NHS

The North Union High School National Honor Society recently inducted 16 new members into their charter, making a total of 25 members.
During the January induction ceremonies, new members learned about their involvement in citizenship, leadership, character, scholarship and service to their community.

North Union School district and village seek sidewalk grant

The Village of Richwood could have new sidewalks in the near future to help make it safer for students to walk to school.
Members of Richwood Village Council passed an emergency ordinance at a meeting Tuesday night to make that happen.

North Union celebrates 75 years during National FFA Week

FFA Week gives members a chance to educate the public about agriculture. During the week, chapters host teacher appreciation breakfasts, conduct “Ag Olympics” competitions, speak to the public about agriculture, volunteer for community service projects and more. The week of George Washington’s birthday was designated as National FFA Week in 1947 at a National FFA Board of Directors meeting. FFA Week always runs from Saturday to Saturday, and encompasses Feb. 22, Washington’s birthday. this tear it will be celebrated Feb. 16 to 23, 2013. To celebrate National FFA week, North Union FFA Reporter Kayla Dysert provided a letter on what FFA has done for her as well as the impact it can make and has made on others.

Hall of Pride recipients inducted

Three new Hall of Pride nominees were inducted last Tuesday at North Union High School. The event took place during half-time of the North Union-Bishop Ready boys basketball game. The evening also honored senior members of the boys basketball team and members of the North Union High School pep band.
Eric Holman, high school principal introduced Gale L. Perkins, and Doris and Richard Griffith as the newest honorees.

School district shares services

School districts continually look at their finances, trying to find ways to stay within their budgets. More and more districts are looking at ways to save money. North Union and Ridgemont are collaborating on just that issue.

Postal Service announces new delivery schedule

The United States Postal Service announced plans to transition to a new delivery schedule during the week of Aug. 5, 2013, that includes package delivery Monday through Saturday, and mail delivery Monday through Friday. The Postal Service expects to generate cost savings of approximately $2 billion annually once the plan is fully implemented.

Memorial Hospital of Union County is inviting women to celebrate your health on Friday, April 12. The event will be held at the Bunsold Middle School, 14198 Route 4, Marysville. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. There is a small charge for those attending and a discount for those 65 years of age and older.

Three visitors bureaus to attract tourism

The Logan, Union and Champaign County Visitors Bureaus announce a joint marketing initiative designed to attract visitors to the tri-county area. The initiative, “Ohio’s Ramblin’ Road Trip,” includes retro-themed marketing initiatives including a Visitors Guide, website and Facebook page and a call for travelers to get off the beaten path and go back a bit in time. The retro theme is designed to evoke feelings of nostalgia and memories of the simpler, more carefree times and places in our past. The marketing appeal invites visitors to linger and enjoy the comforts of small town hospitality at our wide variety of destinations.

NU Robotics students are California bound
Teams qualify for world competition
Since October, 12 teams from North Union Middle School have been building robots and preparing them for various competitions in Ohio in hopes of having the best creation and the opportunity to compete at a higher level.

Health Department offers council bio terrorism planning
Rick Roush, of the Union County Health Department and Jacob Buena de Mesquita, of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) approached village council with an opportunity to protect Richwood in case of a bio terrorism attack.

Pat’s Print Shop celebrates 30 years

When someone desires to start their own business, they hope to be successful by learning and growing as they go. Pat Hamilton had that desire and has continued to grow in her business for 30 years.

OSTPA holds awards banquet
The Ohio State Tractor Pullers Association (OSTPA) recently held their 42nd Annual Awards Banquet at the Columbus Airport Marriott in Columbus. Local residents were honored during the banquet, including Eilene Kale (“Ride the Lightening”), Ken and Justin Gravatt (“Struttin Buck”), Super Stock class; Brad Jerew (“Wild Times”) Modified class; and Cory Hoffman (“King of Deeres”) Pro Stock class.

NU Board to discuss valedictorian qualifications

Students enrolled at North Union High School could have a better shot at becoming valedictorian beginning as early as the 2014-15 school year.
NUHS guidance counselor Jennifer Willis and Principal Eric Holman approached the school board Monday night to ask members to consider adding another option to the district’s policy for students to attain the honor.

Care Train partners with “Prom Remix”

Care Train of Union County is again offering support to Union County residents, particularly junior and senior high school girls preparing for “prom.”
