Come home for Springenfest fun!

Many people will travel back to Richwood for the 37th annual Springenfest two-day festival which will take place on Friday and Saturday, June 14 and 15, at the Richwood Independent Fairgrounds. It’s like coming back for a reunion of family and friends.

Two friends work together for a good cause

Opportunities arise every day, even at the barbershop. Grace Boyd, her mom and brother visited the Richwood Barbershop one day for her brother to get a haircut. After the clip job was over, Jim Goodwin, barbershop owner, handed both youngsters a wooden cross he had carved, just out of friendship. A few days later, Grace returned showing Goodwin how she decorated the cross by painting it.

Local pantries host car show

The Richwood Emergency Assistance Program (REAP) and the North Union Personal Needs Pantry (PNP) will host their second annual Free Car Show on Saturday, June 15. This year’s event will be held at The Richwood Fairgrounds.

Richwood Police Department announces new sergeant
Richwood Police Chief Monte Asher has hired Marcus Ballinger as the new sergeant for the police department. The position became open with the retirement of Sgt. Rebecca Frazier last year.

You’ve got a friend
Bill and Vicki Rose, Jr. can say they have a good support line of friends. Bill was recently diagnosed with small cell lung cancer and most recently was told that two spots have appeared on his pancreas. When word got out of his health status, his friends showed up, asking what they can do for them.

Council continues discussion on tiling
Council members listened to a request from two local farmers regarding tiling their farm fields and redirecting storm water from their properties into the village’s storm water system. At Monday night’s meeting, council continued to discuss the situation.

Weekend fun at the fairgrounds

This weekend will be busy at the Richwood Fairgrounds and the public is invited to attend any or all the events. The place will be packed with all types of activity, food and fun.

Richwood Gazette is available online

For years, subscribers living outside central Ohio have had to wait for their newspaper to arrive in the mail to catch up on Richwood news. Those who travel to warmer climates for the winter have also had up to two weeks waiting for their newspaper to appear in their mailbox. Now readers anywhere in the world will be able to access the weekly edition online the day it is published and on newsstands.

Fatal crash leads to indictment
Other indictments handed down

A Union County man could be facing more than a decade in prison stemming from the fatal crash that killed a Richwood woman earlier this year.
A Union County Grand Jury has indicted Gerald Keeton, 45, of 6 Main St., Magnetic Springs. He is charged with two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and three counts of operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, a drug of abuse or a combination of them.

We are off to the races in Richwood

The Richwood Matinee Club is inviting the public to the Richwood Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 15. The event begins at noon. Post time is 12 noon and there is no charge to watch the races. Programs and 50/50 raffle tickets will be available for sale during the event.

Center announces new director

The New Center at 235 Grove Street in Richwood has a new director at the helm.
Suzanna Twining grew up in Lima. She moved to Columbus to attend The Ohio State University in 1995 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Child and Family Studies. In 2000, she earned a master’s degree in Family Science. Her graduate work is focused on juvenile delinquent youth with an emphasis on child development and family dynamics.

Weather again affects Springenfest

Members of the North Union Athletic Committee (NUAC) report another successful two-day Springenfest event is in the books.

Putman joins Gazette, J-T
A change in the Journal-Tribune sports department is underway which should continue the paper’s mission to deliver quality coverage to its readers.
Wednesday, June 10, was the final day on the job for Virg Rankin, who has chosen to retire after an 18-year affiliation with the Richwood Gazette and 16 years with the Journal-Tribune. Rankin’s sports background included a 34-year career as a coach of various sports in the North Union school district.
Rankin’s replacement is Bob Putman and he is already on the job.

Indictments issued for alleged meth lab

The group at the center of a raided drug house in Richwood has been indicted.
A Union County grand jury has indicted co-defendants Rickey Steve Cook, Tammy L. Green, Nicole Lee Pinghero and Donald Ray Howard.

Village issues warning: no illegal dumping

The village of Richwood is tired of illegal dumping of non-recyclable items at the village administration office. Should this act continue, the village will lose the use of the recycle bins owned by Union Recyclers.

Police investigate shooting

A 9-1-1 call was received by the Union County Sheriff’s Office Communication Center, Sunday, June 23, at approximately 2:22 p.m. The call was reporting that a man had pointed a gun at his estranged wife and her 20- year-old son. The incident occurred at 216 North Franklin Street in Richwood.

North Union School board hires staff for 2013-14

The North Union Board of Education met Monday to finalize hiring staff for the upcoming school year.
Kathy McInerney was hired on a one-year limited expiring contract with an assignment as a new librarian at North Unon Elementary.

Alleged heroin supplier off the streets

The Union County Multi-Agency Drug Enforcement (MADE) Task Force arrested Lucas A. Tumeo, 25, of 23 Graham Lane in Richwood. Tumeo is charged with one count of corrupting another with drugs, a felony of the second degree and trafficking in drugs, a felony of the fifth degree.

Red, white and blue at Prospect Park

As we prepare to celebrate our nation’s freedom on Thursday, July 4, make it a family affair at the Prospect Community Park. The Prospect Lions, Battle Run Fire Department and the American Legion Post 368 are sponsoring the family day event.

Prospect to build veterans memorial
Members of the Prospect Community Park Board have approved plans to build a Veterans’ Memorial at the Prospect Park.
The memorial will consist of a central granite monument, honoring the five branches of the armed forces, five granite benches encircling the monument, three lighted flag poles, a memorial walkway made of engraved, sponsored bricks and landscaping.

Kale Memorial tractor pull set
The third annual Delynn Kale Memorial Truck and Tractor Pull will take off Saturday, July 6, at the Richwood Fairgrounds. Fun begins at 5 p.m.

Council meeting canceled
The Richwood Village Council meeting ended quickly as only three council members were present, George Showalter, Scott Jerew and Teresa McElroy. Council members Bill Rose, Jr., Von Beal and Jennifer Huff were absent.

Bridge open on Cobb-Harriman
Residents in the vicinity of Cobb-Harriman Road are glad to see the road open, due to a bridge crossing Rush Creek, which was replaced.
