Robotics students participate in world competition

Eleven North Union middle and high school students have returned from an amazing learning experience, competing with students from 24 countries from around the world. The event was held in Anaheim, Calif., and the competition was the Vex Robotics World Championship, often referred to as the Olympics of the robotics education world.

DI team wins state, prepares for global competition

Last year, the North Union Elementary Destination Imagination (DI) team NU Operational Military Blankets, chose to make and ship fleece blankets to active service people from Union County. This school year, they did a continuing project with DI Project Outreach called REAL to REEL.

RABA updates community events
The Richwood Area Business Association held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 9, at the Richwood-North Union Public Library. Lunch was provided by Bring It Delivery Service and the Richwood Civic Center.

Village holds special election
Asks voters for additional operating funds

Registered voters living within the corporation limits will have an opportunity to vote in a special election next Tuesday, May 7. Polls for voters in Richwood 1 and Richwood 2 precincts will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Richwood fairgrounds. Village council members urge voters to take time to vote.

National Day of Prayer Set for May 2
The Richwood Area Ministerial Association will again sponsor the National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 2.
Everyone is invited to meet at the old town hall/police station across from the Mini Mart, 101 South. Franklin Street, at noon to pray for local, state and national officials, emergency medical staff, military, schools, and events happening all around the world. This non-denominational event is free and open to the public.

First quarter concealed carry statistics released
Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine recently issued concealed carry license statistics for the first quarter of 2013, indicating that more than 37,000 concealed carry licenses were issued in Ohio, a dramatic increase over the same period in 2012.

Stamp out hunger drive begins

On Saturday, May 11, 2013, the U.S. Postal Service and the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will deliver for America in conducting the nation’s largest single-day food drive.

NU schools win Spielman Scholarship

The North Union Athletic Boosters and fundraising committee have received word they have tied for first place in donating the most amount of money towards the Spielman Gridiron Classic.

Richwood – N.U. alumni banquet is June 8

High School graduation is near, so that means that the 97th Richwood–North Union Alumni Banquet is set for Saturday, June 8. The event will be held at North Union Middle School, 12555 Mulvane Road, Richwood, in an air conditioned cafeteria.

Annual rabies vaccination clinics announced

Spring means it’s time for the annual Union County rabies vaccination clinic. Dog and cat owners can get their pets vaccinated against rabies for only $8 a pet on Sunday, May 19, from 1 to 4 p.m. at several locations throughout the county.

Richwood Council learns about energy project

Representatives from Marion Technical College visited Richwood Village Council Monday night to discuss the possibility of making the village an Energy Special Improvement District (ESID).
Ed Danner, a member of the MTC board of directors, told council that a recent opportunity for a solar project in Claibourne Township made the need for an ESID apparent.

Stofcheck Ambulance ends in June

The end of an era closes for the Stofcheck Ambulance service at the end of June. Losing their contract with Marion General Hospital makes it impossible for the company to continue, said Ed Stofcheck, Sr., the founder and co-owner of the company. MedCare Ambulance, which is a subsidiary of OhioHealth, was awarded the contract with Marion General Hospital. They have a station at 310 Executive Drive, near Marion General Hospital.

National EMS Week, May 19-25

Take time next to week recognize your local EMS (Emergency Medical Service) men and women during National EMS Week, May 19 to 25. They are on hand 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist people in need of medical attention.

NU FFA team captures state title

For 12 years, the North Union FFA Agronomy team has dominated in agronomy competition, winning the state title and competing nationally. Again this year, the team has claimed the 2013 state FFA Agronomy title.

FFA receives prestigious award

The North Union FFA Chapter was named a top ten chapter in two different categories and only one of 30 to receive a gold emblem award. The North Union FFA was selected from 305 other FFA chapters in the state to win in the student and chapter divisions for the second time in North Union FFA history.

Library adds access to new items

The Richwood-North Union Public Library services will be expanding to nearly eight million items for customers.
Beginning Monday, June 3, the library will become the newest member of the “Serving Every Ohioan” library consortium. This opportunity will give residents access to information from 89 libraries throughout Ohio. This collection includes books, movies, music, magazines, audiobooks, video games and much more.

Council announces budget cuts

Richwood Village Council has released a list of services that will be cut from the budget due to the failure of a recent special election for a proposed tax levy that would have generated approximately $95,000 for the village operating fund.

Honor a veteran, remember Memorial Day

Memorial Day is Monday, May 27, a day to remember those veterans who lost their lives, securing the freedoms Americans have every day.

Office closed Memorial Day
Because Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 27, The Richwood Gazette office will be closed and published a day late. Subscribers and news stands will get the newspaper on Thursday. The Richwood Gazette staff hopes everyone has a safe holiday.
