Family remembers brother, father, grandfather on this Veteran’s Day

Duane Perkins was born and raised south of Richwood and worked on the family farm. He graduated from Richwood High School in 1952 and was given the opportunity to attend college, as his three siblings had done.

Voters turn out for General Election

Richwood Village Council held a special election in August where only 143 voters remembered to visit the polls. The majority of those voters defeated efforts to pass two levies, one for the general operating of the village and one for the park operations.

United Way offers public challenge

$12,000 in 12 hours. That’s the goal of a 12-hour marathon of United Way programming set to air on WQTT 1270 AM Friday, Nov. 22. The local radio station is turning its airwaves over to the local organization from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. that day to highlight stories of people who imported from gifts made to the non-profit.

Pharmacy to open in Richwood

Tim and Lisa Sheehan, owners of Prospect Pharmacy, are opening a new pharmacy in Richwood. Their hopes are to open “Richwood Pharmacy” at 24 West Ottawa Street, the former location of The Ohio State Bank after the first of the new year.

DaVita Dialysis Center comes to Marysville

Memorial Hospital of Union County’s affiliate, the Union County Hospital Association (UCHA), is partnering with DaVita to make dialysis services accessible for area residents.

Wildcats advance in playoffs

The Union County Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol and Wreaths Across America™ (WAA) would like to invite the public to attend an event to honor veterans on Friday, Dec. 14, 2013. The Union County Composite Squadron has volunteered to conduct a WAA ceremony this year at the Union County Monument in Marysville at 12 noon and at the Richwood Veterans Memorial at 2 p.m. Seven ceremonial wreaths will be placed at each monument to remember those who served, honor their sacrifices and teach the younger generation about the high cost of our freedom.

Pertussis booster shots encouraged

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) is encouraging Ohioans to get up to date on their pertussis vaccinations following outbreaks in several communities across the state. ODH monitors outbreaks of pertussis in Ohio and provides vaccines to local health departments when immunization clinics are needed to help control an outbreak.

Man dies in accident

A Richwood man died over the weekend after a falling tree hit him.
Deputies and medics from the Northern Union County Fire and EMS District responded to a property at 28621 McMahan Road Saturday at 10:20 a.m. for a report of an injured man, Cecil Swartzentruber, 58, who was struck by a falling tree.

RAMA to host Festival of Thanks

The Richwood Area Ministerial Association (RAMA) is hosting their annual Festival of Thanks on Sunday, Nov. 24. The event will be held at the Fulton Creek Friends Church, near the intersection of State Routes 4 and 37, on Fulton Creek Road.

Hensley resigns as village administrator

“Effective Oct 29, 2013, Richwood Village Administrator Lin Hensley submitted his resignation as village administrator for personal reasons.

North Union School Board members took their annual tour of the Tri-Rivers Career Center in Marion, prior to their regular board meeting Monday evening. Kevin Crosthwaite and Donald Tumeo were both absent from the meeting.

The Richwood-North Union Public Library is preparing for the holidays and they invite the public to help them light up the library by sponsoring a Christmas tree.

Humane Society announces director

The Union County Humane Society (UCHS) has named Carol Martin, as the new Director of Shelter Operations. Martin is the Medical Services Supervisor, as she has been serving the local shelter for over 12 years. She began as a volunteer at the facility, earning the title “Volunteer of the Year” in 2005, as she logged in 2,000 hours in nine months.

Burglary suspect caught

On Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at approximately 1:16 p.m., the Union County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call from a residence in the 14000 block of Boundary Road. The caller stated they had returned home and found an unknown male exiting the residence.

New director is announced at Center

Gabby Hastings enjoys working with people and her work experience shows that. She’s been a volunteer teacher’s aide at North Union Local Schools, a volunteer coordinator and for the last nine years, she’s been the activity director at Milcrest Nursing Home in Marysville. She began as The Center’s Director last week.

Two retire with 86 years experience

Mike Temple, branch manager of the Richwood Heritage Cooperative and Ken Downing, grain elevator superintendent, will both retire on Jan. 3, 2014. The public is invited to attend a Retirement Open House on Wednesday, Dec. 11, at the Richwood-North Union Public Library, 4 East Ottawa Street, in the meeting room from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to share memories and wish them well in future endeavors.

Council accepts demolition bid

The Richwood Village Council accepted a bid from Fisher Excavating Contractor in the amount of $4,160 to remove an unused storage building that sits north of the administration building at 153 North Franklin Street. The building was in need of many repairs and council didn’t think it was wise to put additional money into an old building.
