FFA captures district crown in rural soils competition

The North Union FFA Chapter has made a great triumph in the FFA soils Career Development Event (CDE). Along with the Rural soils CDE team, the NU FFA has an Urban soils team. The teams placed first and second, respectfully in the District Six FFA Soils CDE.

While history says November’s election will not be the most popular, it could be one of the busiest.
“I would say this election, the municipal election with village council seats and school board seats and township trustees, is definitely the busiest and the most difficult for us,” said Ameena S. Birchfield, director of the Union County Board of Elections. “You would think it would be the presidential election, because it is so well advertised and so many people come out to vote, but this one, definitely for us, is the busiest and most difficult. “

Changes will be seen in Union County dog registration

On Dec. 1, all counties in Ohio will enact the new dog registration procedures because of a new state law passed this summer by the Ohio General Assembly. The law requires Ohio counties to offer one-year, three-year and lifetime dog licenses for pet owners to purchase. Approximately 10,000 dog tags are sold each year.

North Union High School is getting geared up for the annual homecoming events. The fun begins on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

The Richwood Police Department is encouraging senior citizens to consider the Senior Watch Program.

Baldwin to form Animal Cruelty Task Force

Steffen Baldwin, executive director of the Union County Humane Society will leave his position by the end of the year.
He has experience in operating a homeless shelter with the mentally ill while living in San Bernardino, Calif. after his stint in the U.S. Army. He later earned a degree in public administration and ended up moving to Union County to be closer to family.

It’s Toys for Tots time!

Christmas items are already on store shelves, so it must mean that Christmas shopping has begun. In less than two and one half months, children will be waiting impatiently to open their gifts. For some children, that excitement may not happen.

The North Union Wildcats and the Richwood community have a lot to celebrate
The North Union Education Association, North Union Athletic and Band Boosters, Elementary PTO, Parents clubs, Richwood Banking Company, Royal Inspection, Richwood Area Business Association, Fulton Creek Friends Church and North Union Board of Education will be hosting a community “tailgate” party to celebrate the academic achievements of the school district on Friday, Oct. 11 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at North Union High School, 401 North Franklin Street. This is also homecoming weekend, so come support your Wildcats!

United Way wants to be a millionaire
The United Way of Union County has set a fundraising goal of $1 million dollars that runs through November.
There are 45 programs in Union County that United Way helps support and this year, the requests for funding has raised 7.5 percent from 2012. With community support, United Way is hoping to meet their record-setting goal this year.

Church hosts last drive of the year

The last of five scheduled bloodmobile drives of 2013 is set for Monday, Oct. 21, at the Richwood United Methodist Church, 18 South Fulton Street. The hours of operation are from 1 to 7 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome to attend.

Contractors give back to communities

The Ohio Contractors Association (OCA) has nine chapters in the state. Each chapter volunteers to do a project that will benefit a community or an organization. Chapter nine, in central Ohio had two suggested projects and when the vote was taken, they elected to help the youth in Magnetic Springs.

State salt prices continue sharp decline
Ohio taxpayers saving more than $20 million from just two years ago

If the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) paid 2011 road salt prices this winter, taxpayers would be footing the bill for an extra $20 million in costs. Instead, ODOT and hundreds of local governments will pay a statewide average of just $35.83 per ton of road salt for the upcoming winter. Compare that to the statewide average of $54.02 paid per ton just two years ago.
This year, state and local governments estimate purchasing 1,118,044 tons of salt.

School board discusses common core standards

The North Union Board of Education was questioned about the Common Core Standards at the Monday night meeting.
Two parents, Brandon Stringer and Terri Cline, both addressed the board with questions about the common core.

National School Bus Safety week runs through Friday, Oct. 25. This year’s theme, “Stand Back from the Yellow and Black” reminds us that the most dangerous part of the school bus ride for children is when they get on and off the bus.

Electronic waste recycling ends in Union County

Union Recyclers, located on Rt. 36 east of Marysville, has been a host site for an electronic waste recycling company, called Accurate IT. According to program coordinator Linda D. Wuethrich, they were forced to cancel the program immediately.

Council prepares for online auction

Village council members voted to dispose of obsolete vehicles and bicycles during Monday night’s meeting. The auction will be held online at
www.govdeals.com. Once an account has been established, council will be able to sell off items that have been confiscated or unused items, such as bicycles, a police cruiser, two village pickup trucks and other items. The online auction was less cost to council than holding a public auction.

Veterans remembered Nov. 11
Veterans Remembrance of Union County invites the public to attend a Veterans Day Ceremony on Monday, Nov. 11. The event will begin at 2 p.m. at the Veterans Monument Plaza, in front of the courthouse, located at the corner of Fifth and Court Streets, in Marysville.

Students to pay tribute to veterans
North Union Elementary School students are preparing to pay tribute to community heroes during their annual Veterans Day celebration. The event will be held on Monday, Nov. 11, from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. at the elementary school, 420 Grove Street, Richwood.

Publish a day late
The Richwood Gazette will publish a day late next week, due to the General Election on Tuesday, Nov. 5. To include the results of the election, subscribers will receive their newspaper one day later than normal. Newspapers will be on stands Thursday, Nov. 7.
