The annual United Way of Union County campaign kicked off this week, and it will come with the endorsement of many community leaders. A “Million Dollar Roundtable” has been formed to help the local non-profit organization reach its milestone fundraising goal this fall.

September is National Preparedness Month (NPM). NPM was originally created by FEMA’s Ready Campaign in response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001, in order to educate the public on how to prepare for all hazards and emergencies.

Student loses life in car accident

North Union High School students mourned the loss of a classmate last Wednesday, when Jaycob R. Fox, 17, lost his life in a car accident.

Local businesses and many vendors will have the downtown streets lined with sales on baked goods, produce, Americana, primitive and fall décor, lighted houses, quilted items, jewelry, handcrafted items, food, clothing, you name it! Over 40 vendors will be participating.

Heifer Festival helps fight hunger

The Ninth Annual Heifer Festival will take place Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Richwood Fairgrounds. The public is urged to spend some time learning and supporting the hunger and poverty problems here at home and around the world.
There will be free parking and free admission to the event from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Anyone attending is invited to bring canned, non-perishable food items or personal needs items which will be distributed to The Richwood Emergency Assistance Program (REAP) Food Pantry and the North Union Personal Needs Pantry.

Council discusses sidewalks and driveways

At a previous village council meeting, council members were given a rough draft of guidelines for sidewalks and driveways inside the village limits. The draft was designed by Village Administrator Lin Hensley. At Monday night’s regular meeting, council continued discussing those guidelines. Council member Bill Rose and Village Solicitor Joe Jimenez were both absent from the meeting.

A small fee covers parking and general admission for everyone in your vehicle, so the entire family can enjoy top bluegrass and folk performers, kids’ games and activities, horse-drawn wagon rides, a pie-baking contest, pumpkin carving, a local-foods culinary experience, and so much more.

Tri-Rivers campus welcomes RAMTEC

The grand opening and ribbon cutting for the new Robotics and Advanced Manufacturing Technology Education Collaborative-RAMTEC, is set for Sept. 19. The new addition is located on the Tri-Rivers Career Center Campus in Marion. A business summit will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the Auditorium, followed by the ribbon cutting at 4:30 and tours through 6:30 p.m.

Community flu clinics start in September

The Union County Health Department kicked off the flu vaccination season Sept. 3. The health department is offering flu vaccination at two public clinics, during weekly walk-in hours for adults, and by appointment for families with children.

North Union competes in Spielman Gridiron Classic
The North Union Athletic Boosters are gearing up for this year’s Spielman Gridiron Classic.
Organizers are putting on the finishing touches for a number of fundraising events which will be announced in coming weeks. The main event will be held Friday, Oct. 4 when the North Union football team takes on the Vikings of River Valley.

School board sees savings in HB 264

The North Union School Board has implemented energy savings measures and they see that it is paying off.
House Bill 246 is known as the Energy Conservation Program. It allows school districts to make energy efficient improvements to their buildings and use the cost savings to pay for those improvements. This is a one time offer to borrow funds without having to pass a ballot issue for the authority to borrow. This program has saved millions in utility bills and operating costs, and all at no additional taxpayer expense. Since the beginning of this program, more than 500 Ohio school districts have taken advantage of this opportunity.

Auditor’s Office completes revaluation
Editor’s note: The following information is supplied by the Union County Auditor’s Office.
In accordance with state law, the Union County Auditor’s Office has tentatively completed a revaluation of more than 26,000 parcels of property in the county, submitted the results to the Ohio Department of Taxation and they have been approved.

North Union hosts Festival of Bands

Get ready for the sixth annual North Union Festival of Band Show on Saturday, Sept. 28. The fun begins at 6 p.m. at the North Union High School football field, located at 401 North Franklin Street in Richwood.

The MAiZE opens Sept. 21

The Rausch family of Milford Center invites the public to their season opening of their nine-acre corn field adventure. The labyrinth draws thousands of people each year who are curious maze fans. The corn maze provides good family fun.

Pavers dedicated on Veteran’s Day
Plans are underway for the 7th Veteran’s Day and Voices from the Stone event to be held at the Veteran’s Plaza on the Courthouse Lawn in Maryville on Nov. 11, 2013, at 2 p.m.

After fair paper delayed
The 2013 Richwood Fair Blue Ribbon Review newspaper, previously scheduled to be published on Wednesday, Sept. 25, will be delayed one week.
Due to unforeseen events, a decision was made to print the special edition on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, to ensure time to set type for fair results, develop pictures and set thank you ads properly.

Village hears of multi-use trail project

Members of the the Richwood Lake Multi-Use Trail Project presented goals and were seeking council’s support for a walking path around Richwood Lake at Monday night’s meeting.

Fair board seeks public support
Philip Plummer came into possession of 1,200 acres and in 1883, the village was surveyed and platted in the midst of a dense wilderness and the land was known as “Richwoods.”

Property tax valuation drops county-wide

County wide, taxable property values have fallen a total of nearly $25.8-million.
“It is regrettable,” said Union County Auditor Andrea Weaver. “Obviously, for an entity that receives tax dollars, less value equals less revenue, but my job, really, is to reflect fairness in valuation. I want to make sure every home, every parcel, is fairly and accurately valued.”
