The Richwood Police Department offers a program designed to help assist senior citizens living within the village of Richwood.

Memorial Health will open its new state-of-the-art 35,000 square foot outpatient facility, Memorial City Gate Medical Center, at 120 Coleman’s Crossing Blvd. in Marysville on Dec. 8.

Understanding Snow Emergency Levels

It’s here! Ohio’s winter weather has already arrived in the form of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and ice. The challenges of navigating slick roadways have already presented themselves due to the recent early season snow fall. The Sheriff of Union County notifies drivers about local road conditions through a system called the Snow Emergency Levels. Ohio County Sheriffs have the responsibility to evaluate road conditions during winter weather events and declare snow emergencies. The Sheriff’ Office is concerned not only for the safety of Union County residents, but also those who travel into or out of our county for work or other reasons. Existing Ohio Attorney General Opinions give the Sheriff the authority to declare snow emergencies and temporarily close County, Township, State, and Municipal roadways when this action is reasonably necessary to preserve the public peace.

Gazette to publish Christmas church events
Local churches are invited to submit special events taking place during the Christmas season.  The Richwood Gazette will publish a listing of dates and times on Wednesday, Dec. 17.

Council hears concern on village audit

Village resident Joan Wells attended Monday night’s council meeting to raise a concern she had regarding the village’s financial state. She asked why the 2012-13 village audits were not done. Council president Von Beal explained the situation to her.

Citizens graduate from The Citizen Academy

The Union County Sheriff’s Citizen Academy graduated eleven committed citizens of Union County on Dec. 1. This twelve-week program met every Monday night at the Sheriff’s Office. The class began Sept. 8 and the goal of the academy is to educate community members about the operations and statutory requirements of the Office of Sheriff.

Laying of wreaths at memorial
The Union County Composite Squadron is conducting the “Wreaths Across America” ceremony at the North Union Veterans Monument by the Richwood Lake on Saturday, Dec. 13. The event will begin at 2 p.m. and the public is invited to attend this moving ceremony. Seven ceremonial wreaths will be placed at the monument to remember those who served, to honor their sacrifices, and to teach our younger generations about the high cost of our freedoms.

RAMA to supply hams for Christmas

The Richwood Area Ministerial Association will be supplying hams for families who need assistance this Christmas season.

Village to save money using polymer bags

The village of Richwood recently purchased a polymer injection system from the city of Bradford, Ohio. This new equipment will help save the village $12,000 to $15,000 a year on disposing of sludge from the wastewater plant.

United Way hopes to reach fundraising goal

The 2014 United Way campaign has hit the home stretch with its $1 million milestone goal within reach. Nearly $900,000 has been pledged to date with projected estimates giving totals near the target level.

The North Union Board of Education has announced the 2015 Organizational meeting is set for Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at 6 p.m. at the North Union Administrative Office, 12920 Route 739.

January is National Radon Action month

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has declared January 2015 as “National Radon Action Month." Health agencies throughout the United States has joined forces to promote awareness of the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers. The American Lung Association, Centers for Disease Control and the National Cancer Institute all agree that radon is a National health problem and they encourage radon testing during the January awareness drive.

Flu is flying high in Ohio

Ohio is experiencing widespread flu activity. Hospitalizations associated with the flu have increased significantly. Between Nov. 30 and Dec. 13, there were 783 influenza-associated hospitalizations in the state, bringing the total number of hospitalizations in Ohio for the 2014-2015 flu season to 985. In addition to increased hospitalizations, Ohio is also seeing an increase in reports of influenza-like illness in outpatient settings and emergency rooms, increased thermometer sales, and increased internet searches related to the flu.

Commissioners set 2015 budget

The Union County Commissioners have finalized the 2015 budget. The $19.867 million budget is a seven percent increase.

Office closed  Jan. 1, 2015
Because of New Year's Day falling on Thursday, the Richwood Gazette will be closed. The business will resume normal office hours on Friday, Jan. 2, 2015.  Have a Happy New Year.
