Richwood showcased on Antique Roadshow

A piece of Richwood history was shown last week on the popular show “The Antique Roadshow.” A guest brought in a diorama that was built by Richwood resident P. R. Adams. Adams was a jeweler and was well known for repairing watches in town many years ago.

Board hears update on Race to the Top

The North Union Board of Education heard an update about the five year program, Race to the Top. This is the fifth and final year of the program and the board will begin looking at a new strategic plan for the school district.

Wages for employees explained

Village council members received a list of wages for employees and elected officials at the  Monday, Jan. 20, meeting. In an effort to be fiscally responsible, some new wages have been explained.

United Way announces distribution of donor funds

United Way of Union County volunteers used indicators to determine how to best spend donor dollars in their recently completed five-month evaluation. They have announced that 42 programs of 27 Partner Agencies will be the recipients of $594,594.05 in 2014, as approved by the Board of Trustees at its January meeting. In all, $713,924.25 of total community support has been earmarked for the coming year.

Free STD/HIV testing event set

The Union County Health Department and the Union County AIDS Taskforce are sponsoring a free STD/HIV testing event Friday, Feb. 7 ,from noon to 6 p.m. at the Union County Services Building, 940 London Ave, Marysville.

Internship and Education Fair at Marion Campus
Marion Technical College, The Ohio State University at Marion, Ohio Means Jobs - Marion County, and Clear Channel Communications have teamed up to host the Marion Campus Job/Internship and Education Fair at the Marion Campus on Thursday, Feb. 20, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the Alber Student Center.

Celebrate National FFA Week

The North Union FFA Chapter will celebrate National FFA Week, Feb. 15 -22. 
This year’s theme is “Ignite” and it embraces more than 80 years of FFA traditions while looking forward to the organization’s future. More than 500,000 members will participate in National FFA Week activities at local, state and national levels. These members have a passion for agriculture.

Weaver discusses various tax items

Union County Auditor Andrea Weaver visited the Richwood Village Council meeting Monday evening to inform council members of various tax topics.
Weaver distributed information regarding the 2014 requirements for homestead exemptions for property owners. Current recipients receiving the homestead exemption based on a prior application, will not have to meet income requirements for 2014 and will remain on the program.

Hall of Pride winners announced

Each year, North Union High School recognizes graduates who have achieved outstanding accomplishments in athletics, medicine, business, education, humanitarian pursuits or service to the school or community. The nominees must have been out of school five years or longer.

Learn about teen dating violence prevention and awareness

February is National Teen Dating Violence Prevention and Awareness Month. Have you talked with your teens? 
According to the website BreakTheCycle.org, one in three teens and young adults experience some form of dating abuse and this statistic also holds true with adult relationships as well. This means that one in three teens is being questioned of their whereabouts often by their partner; one in three teens is being called despicable names by someone who claims to care about them; one in three teens is covering up bruises-physical, emotional, or sexual-abuse from their friends, teachers, parents, or caregivers.

Schools to make up for snow days

This winter’s weather has been beyond extraordinary.  We’ve heard new terms such as polar vortex, snow rollers and frost quakes. Needless to say, the cold temperatures, icy roads and many inches of snow have caused most schools in Ohio to close, using more than their allotted five calamity days.

Richwood resident Gene Wiley was honored by the Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association Jan. 26, as a lifelong horsemen’s advocate, who has given selflessly to the sport he dearly loves. 

Salt companies fail to bid on contract

UCHS uses cat ear tipping as sign for sterilization

The Union County Humane Society (UCHS) made changes to its cat clinic policy earlier this year to help manage local feral cat populations.

NU Elementary to host special events
Calling children ages two though five who have not started school! Come for an evening of fun for the Wee Cats 2nd event “Suesswood” held Tuesday, March 4. The fun begins at 5:30 to 7 p.m. at North Union Elementary, 420 Grove Street, in Richwood.

Perkins earns Eagle Scout rank

Steven Perkins, of Boy Scout Troop 440, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest recognition in the Boys Scouts of America on Dec. 19, 2013. He is the son of Gary and Laura, of Richwood. Troop 440 is sponsored by the Richwood First United Methodist Church.

NU Robotics are California bound!

North Union robotics teams competed Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Ohio Vex Robotics State Championship. From over the 200 registered Vex teams in Ohio, North Union represented six of the 20 middle school teams and two of the 30 high school teams in attendance.

Council continues to deal weather related problems

Village crews have worked diligently in plowing the snow as if falls, and removing piles of snow from around village streets. When the streets are cleared, potholes are revealed in many streets, causing many unhappy drivers.

Furer earns Eagle Scout award

Jordan Furer, a member of Boy Scout Troop 440, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest recognition in the Boy Scouts of America on Dec. 26, 2013. Jordan is the son of Richard and Sheryl, of Mt. Victory. Troop 440 is sponsored by the Richwood First United Methodist Church.

School hosts 1st Readiness Fair

The North Union High School believes in helping students make smooth transitions whether it is from middle-to-high school or preparing for college or a career. To help with that next step, they will host the 1st Annual College and Career Readiness Fair.
