North Union announces valedictorian and salutatorians

The North Union High School has released the names of the 2014 valedictorian and salutatorians. Graduation ceremonies will be held this Friday at 8:30 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. The time of the program was adjusted due to the North Union Softball team who will be playing in the state semi-final softball game in Akron. The game begins at 3 p.m. and to allow for those attending the game time to return to graduation, the school changed the starting time. 

Vaccine distributed to combat measles outbreak

As we congratulate new high school and college graduates and celebrate their accomplishments with family and friends from across the state and beyond, it’s an opportunity to make sure that these graduates (and you) are up-to-date on your vaccinations. The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) reminds Ohioans that immunizations are the most effective way to prevent illness from vaccine-preventable diseases. The ongoing measles outbreak in parts of Ohio has reached more than 160 cases and serves as a reminder to all Ohioans that these diseases can be stopped if people are vaccinated. When individuals are fully vaccinated, the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is 97 percent effective in preventing the measles.

Trio indicted on cocaine charges

A Union County Grand Jury has charged a trio of local individuals in connection with their alleged cocaine use.

Graduation is an exciting time for families as they mark an important milestone in their young adult’s life. The Union County Drug Free Coalition wants to remind parents that as they are celebrating with family and friends, it is important to know the laws about underage drinking.

One arrested after shooting incident

A bicyclist, carrying a hand gun, was arrested Sunday, May 25, for allegedly shooting at a truck. The incident happened in the 28000 block of Kinney Pike.

Identification cards for children
For the first time, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) traveled to a local school, Columbus Preparatory Academy, to issue State of Ohio Identification (ID) cards to minor-aged children whose parents voluntarily requested them. BMV staff processed applications, took digital photos and issued Ohio ID cards to eligible children. The IDs will be printed at BMV headquarters and mailed to the children after the final processing has been completed.

Richwood Council prepares for upcoming water line project

Members of the Richwood Village Council held their regular meeting Monday night. Due to the absence of Mayor Bill Nibert, who was hospitalized last week, Bill Rose, president of the council, presided over the meeting. Council member Scott Jerew was absent from the meeting.

Veterans Memorial dedicated July 4

After a long, hard year of fundraising, the Prospect Veterans Memorial committee will see their project dedicated during the July 4 festivities at Prospect. The dedication service begins at 10 a.m. in the Prospect Park.

Off to the races in Richwood

Plan on some summertime fun and come to the Richwood Matinee Races at Richwood Fairgrounds. The event will be held Saturday, June 21 with a post time at noon. There is no charge to watch the races. Programs and raffle tickets will be available on the grounds during the races.

Employees with the village of Richwood, will be flushing the fire hydrants within the village on Monday, June 23. They are preparing for the upcoming water line project which will loop the lines from Blaine Avenue to  East Ottawa Street and East Blagrove Street.

This weekend is Springenfest fun!

Since 1977, hundreds of volunteers have donated their time to organize the Springenfest festival, with the goal of helping North Union athletes. The money raised from the events has been used to build the high school football stadium, North Union Athletic Complex, baseball and softball diamonds, outdoor basketball court, purchased necessary athletic equipment, etc. These efforts have provided quality athletics, saving taxpayers thousands of dollars, so children in the school district can enjoy sports. Since 2002, the North Union Athletic Committee (NUAC) group has spent $124,159.59 for sports.

NU wins Spielman scholarship
For the second consecutive year, the North Union High School was the recipient of the Spielman Gridiron Classic scholarship.The $5000 scholarship was divided to help four high school seniors help pay for their college endeavors.
